French Open Badminton Live: PV Sindhu thrashes Julie Dawall Jakobsen in straight sets, enters next round – Follow Live Updates – Indian badminton star PV Sindhu defeated Denmark’s Julie Dawall Jakobsen in her French Open clash on Wednesday. Sindhu claimed the victory in straight sets. PV Sindhu dominated the first with a scoreline of 21-15 while in the second set the Danish player bounced back to take the lead. However, Sindhu brought her A-game back to claim the set 21-18.

She will next face Line Christophersen of Denmark. Elsewhere, London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal was forced to retire from her opening round match with an injury. Saina Nehwal was trailing 21-11, 9-2 against Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi in her women’s singles clash when she decided to concede.

Earlier, Lakshya Sen stormed into the men’s singles round of 16. The 20-year-old defeated Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen 21-10, 21-16 in 45 minutes. Sourabh Verma also went into the men’s singles round of 32. He defeated Brazil’s Ygor Coelho 22-20, 21-19.

In another men’s singles round of 32, Parupalli Kashyap took local favourite Brice Leverdez the distance but the French shuttler prevailed in 64 minutes by 21-17, 17-21, 21-11.
HS Prannoy was overwhelmed 11-21, 14-21 in his men’s singles round of 32 match against Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei.

In men’s doubles round of 32 clash, Indian fifth seeds Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy come from a game down to beat Chinese Taipei’s Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan 18-21, 21-17, 21-13.

MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila also won their men’s doubles round of 32 match against Joshua Magee and Paul Reynolds from Ireland in just 31 minutes.

Earlier in the competition Kidambi Srikanth lost the opening match against World No.1 Kento Momota while Saina Nehwal retired injured against her Japanese opponent. India’s hopes now rest on the likes of Saina Nehwal.

Among positives, doubles duo Chirag and Satwik emulated Sameer Verma, who got his campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday.

The World Tour Sper 750 event serves as a perfect opportunity for the Indian shuttlers to get some wins under their belt and shake off their rustiness before the BWF World Tour Finals and the BWF World Championships in December.

18:30 PM IST: Saina Nehwal retires

It’s another early exit for Saina Nehwal. She retired injured in her round of 32nd match against Sayaka Takahashi who was controlling the exchanges pretty much from the word go. Saina seemed to be pointing her right upper leg region. She lost the opening set 11-21 and trailed the second set 2-9.

15.45 PM IST: Kento Momota beat Kidambi Srikanth

World No.1 Kento Momota has defeated Kidambi Srikanth in three sets. The Indian badminton star lost 18-21, 22-20 and 19-21 but won hearts with an impressive show against the Japanese. The match lasted for an hour and 19 minutes. Momota won 3 game points as compared to Srikanth score of 1.  It was the 11th consecutive defeat for Srikanth against Momota.

Earlier in the day, mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won their match against Denmark’s Mathias Thyrri and Mai Surrow 21-19, 21-15, at Court 1.

Sameer Verma continued his fine form from Denmark where he was forced to retire in the quarterfinals, to begin his campaign with a win on Tuesday. Verma defeated Lee Dong Keun in straight sets to make it past the first round, while the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila/N Sikki Reddy were knocked out.

Day 2 will see the rest of the Indians in action, with PV Sindhu opening her campaign against World No. 39 Julie Dewall Jakobsen. The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist looked rusty as she crashed out in the Denmark Open quarter-finals, but will hope for better performance in Paris. Saina Nehwal meanwhile begins her tournament with a clash against World No. 15 Sayaka Takahashi. The former World No.1 has a task on her hands if she has to progress, with the Japanese having defeated Nehwal thrice previously.
