French Open 2023: Rafael Nadal has decided to turn down a wildcard offer from the Bordeaux Challenger tournament, as the 14-time champion’s participation in Roland Garros is still under speculation. Jean-Baptiste Perlant, tournament director at Bordeaux, told L’Equipe that he offered the Spaniard a wildcard, but his manager Carlos Costa politely declined the offer and said that Nadal would continue his preparation for his title defence in Manacor. Nadal has been struggling with a hip injury that he suffered at the Australian Open 2023 in January, and fears the Spaniard may miss the Paris Grand Slam grew after he pulled out of this week’s Italian Open.
“I offered him (Nadal’s agent Carlos Costa) one of the wildcards. He very kindly told me that Nadal was continuing his preparation at home in Manacor, that he was not ready and was in a race against time to be ready for the French Open,” Jean-Baptiste Perlant told French sports daily L’Equipe.
Nadal skipped last week’s Madrid Open and missed tournaments at the first five masters in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome. He has also missed the Barcelona Open, which he has won 12 times.
The French Open, which Nadal has won a record 14 times including last year, starts on May 28.
