Nadal defeated Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in the French Open summit clash to win his 14th title at the clay court major. Winning the title at the age of 36, Nadal became the oldest-ever French Open champion, surpassing compatriot Andre Gimeno, who won the French Open title in 1972 at the age of 34.

Nadal, who has been suffering from a chronic foot injury over the last year, has been playing after taking anti-inflammatories injections on daily basis. It is said that the 36-year-old tennis star suffers from a rare degenerative condition.

Nadal by his own admission has been playing with considerable pain throughout the Roland Garros tournament. It was believed that with the injury, after winning the French Open, he would call it quits. A senior Spanish jounalist Angel Garcia has claimed that Nadal can announce his retirement after playing Finals since he is ruining his foot by the day.

However on Sunday after the win, Nadal brought smiles on the faces of his million fans by saying that he is going to keep fighting. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, but I’m going to keep fighting,” Nadal said in the post-match speech.

Nadal, who already leads Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer by winning two Grand Slam titles more than his rivals, is not ready to give up soon and this statement shows that he still has the hunger in him to fight for more titles. With it, he has shut down all the rumours on his imminent retirement.

The world No 5 went on to say, “Well for me personally, very difficult to describe the feeling that I have. It’s something that I’ve for sure never believed, [to] be here at 36, being competitive again, playing in the most important court of my career one more time [a] final. Means a lot to me, means everything, means a lot of energy to try to keep going,” he concluded.

Nadal is now expected to start the preparations for the upcoming Grass court season with the Wimbledon Championships beginning on 27th June.
