French Open 2021 Qualifiers: Ramkumar Ramanathan fought back against America’s Michael Mmoh to win the opening round match of the French Open 2021 Qualifiers. He won the sets 7-6, 6-3 after losing the opening set 2-6. He is now in the fray for a spot in the next round of matches. Ramanathan’s fate in Roland Garros 2021 will be finally decided in the next match.
Prajnesh Gunneswaran, on the other hand, has lost the qualifier against his German rival Oscar Otte in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2. It remains unclear whether he will get another chance for the Roland Garros 2021 main draw.
Prajnesh Gunneswaran vs Oscar Otte
The left-hander Pranjesh, who is ranked 149 in the world, played against World No. 52 Germany’s Oscar Otte. Pranjesh has not competed in the main draw of a Grand Slam since losing the opening round of the Australian Open 2020.
Michael Mmoh vs Ramkumar Ramanathan
Ramkumar, who has failed to enter the main draw of a Grand Slam in a number of attempts, opened his campaign against American Michael Mmoh, ranked 168. His ranking has dropped considerably as the Chennai player is now placed outside the top-200, at number 215.
In 2019, he had featured in all the four grand slams, including Roland Garros.
It is notable that Ramkumar is the first Indian player to reach an ATP World tour singles title final since Somdev Devvarman. He has progressed to Quarter 2 in French Open, Wimbledon and US Open respectively.
