Four PSG players to face sanctions over offensive chants during Marseille game

PSG fans in the stadium also invited trouble for themselves with alleged racist chants targeting Marseille players during the game

The Paris Saint Germain (PSG) vs Marseille was game in Ligue 1 on Sunday night was dominated by PSG, be it on the field with the ball or off the pitch with controversy.

What Happened?

Four players of the Paris side had allegedly made insulting chants towards Marseille fans. Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), the Ligue 1 governing body could sanction the four players.

Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, Achraf Hakimi and Layvin Kurzawa had allegedly shouted “Marseillais, go f*ck your mothers” while celebrating their 4-0 victory over their rivals.

Homophobic chants from stands

PSG fans in the stadium also invited trouble for themselves with alleged racist chants targeting Marseille players during the game, prompting calls for sanctions as well.

Olivier Klein, the inter-ministerial delegate for the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBTQ+ hatred (Dilcrah), posted a video on Monday of PSG supporters using insulting homophobic slurs aimed at their Marseille rivals.

“Very shocked by the unbearable homophobic chants heard at the Parc des Princes,” Klein said on X, formerly Twitter.

He added that he will ask PSG and the French league authorities to bring in sanctions. He also said he will look at the possibility of starting judicial action.

French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera joined the criticism of the fans. “It is unthinkable to remain deaf to such hateful and homophobic chants in our stands,” she said. 

“Regardless of the rivalry and the stakes involved, they must be fought relentlessly by fans, those involved in the competition, the authorities and the public authorities. Yesterday, these chants spoiled the party at the Parc. We need to eradicate it from our stadiums as a matter of urgency.”

PSG’s clarification

PSG published a press release following these incidents. “Paris Saint-Germain condemns all forms of discrimination. We wish to point out that they have no place either in stadiums or in society. Paris Saint-Germain has worked for many years with leading associations in the fight against all discrimination, such as SOS Homophobia, which promotes prevention within training and pre-training centers, Sportitude, SOS Racisme and Licra. with the club and the supporters.”
