Just a few weeks after causing a storm in the Formula 1 world, Helmut Marko was back at ServusTV, chatting with Gerhard Berger. This episode came after the Qatar GP weekend, where Max Verstappen wrapped up his 3rd Drivers’ Title with Red Bull. Helmut Marko was not afraid to speak about Sergio Perez and Red Bull. He also had some interesting remarks to make regarding Fernando Alonso.
Only Fernando Alonso an Alternative
Helmut Marko claimed that Fernando Alonso is the only “real” alternative to Sergio Perez. He said Red Bull doesn’t have any other real alternatives to the Mexican driver.
However, in a show of support, he stated that Red Bull wants to honour the Mexican’s contract. Dropping Sergio Perez right now would lead to a lot of his sponsors getting angry as well. He said, “We’re doing everything we can to get him back on track.” According to Helmut Marko, only Fernando Alonso can keep up with Max.

Sergio Perez should leave
Gerhard Berger had an interesting take on the situation between Red Bull and Sergio Perez. He said that Red Bull doesn’t need to move on from Sergio Perez. It’s the Mexican that needs to move on from the team.
Berger made a comparison to himself and Ayrton Senna. Back when they were teammates in Formula 1, he had no other choice. This is because drivers like to grow in a team. They need the good feeling of beating their teammates. He claimed that right now, Sergio Perez isn’t getting that feeling. He is getting beaten by Max Verstappen at every race.
“Not Before the Mexican GP”
Helmut Marko had a sense of humour when Berger asked about his opinion on the matter with Sergio Perez. He said, “You don’t want to hear an answer from me on that just before the Mexican Grand Prix.”

As it is, the Formula 1 world is full of memes regarding the reception Helmut Marko will get in Mexico. Surely, making another bad remark on the performance of Sergio Perez is not the way to go for the Red Bull advisor.
