Imola GP: Sprint qualifying makes a comeback at Imola Grand Prix: The home of Ferrari, Imola will host the sprint qualifying race for the first time in the 2022 season. There were three sprint qualifying sessions held in 2021, but there are a couple of changes this year, including new points system and several new tracks. F1 Sprint was introduced last year and involved a 100km dash with each going on for around 25-30 minutes. The outcome decides the grid for the end of the week’s headliner – the Grand Prix on Sunday, instead of a regular qualifying session.

Sprint qualifying will undeniably be more significant this year, with the points being awarded to the top eight drivers. Previously, the points were only awarded to the first three drivers.
The driver who takes P1 will now get eight points, as opposed to three. Meanwhile, the driver who takes the eighth spot will now have to settle for just one point. These points will now be applied both in the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles.

P1 – 8 points
P2 – 7 points
P3 – 6 points
P4 – 5 points
P5 – 4 points
P6 – 3 points
P7 – 2 points
P8 – 1 point
There’s been a change around the venues that will host the Sprint race this year. Interlagos makes a comeback for the second time this season for the sprint race. Meanwhile, the Red Bull Ring and Imola will see their first sprint race of the season.

The first sprint race of the 2021 season took place at the British Grand Prix (Silverstone). It was the reigning champion Max Verstappen who took the lead from his rival Lewis Hamilton. Meanwhile, Valtteri Bottas had to settle for a third-place finish.

The second sprint race of the 2021 season took place at the Italian Grand Prix (Monza). Valtteri Bottas took the first position followed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Daniel Ricciardo had to settle for a third-place finish and even went on to win the Italian Grand Prix.
The third sprint race of the 2021 season took place at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix (Interlagos). Valtteri Bottas again sealed the deal as he finished first followed by Max Verstappen in second. Carlos Sainz had to settle for a third-place finish. But, the race saw a stunning comeback from Lewis Hamilton as he gained 15 places in just 24 laps and even went on to win the race.
