Helmut Marko says these 2 drivers can beat Max Verstappen, find out who they are

When asked if any driver on the current grid can beat Max Verstappen, Helmut Marko said that two of them can. But his claim came with a condition.

In a season where their dominance is pretty much unbelievable, Max Verstappen and Red Bull have squashed the competition. They have huge leads in both world championships, and it’s now a matter of when, not if, they win the title. After suffering under the dominance of Mercedes for almost 8 years, fans find themselves under another dominant era.

Another Round of Dominance

In the latest race in Belgium, Max Verstappen started 6th after a gearbox penalty, with Sergio Perez starting in 2nd. At the chequered flag, Max had gapped his teammate by a whopping 22 seconds. Max took the lead from Sergio on lap 17 out of 44. This means that he pulled almost a second per lap on the Mexican in the same car.

Red Bull Advisor Helmut Marko was asked about the Dutchman’s form. As usual, the Austrian did not hold his thoughts back. He has said on many occasions that Sergio Perez cannot challenge Max Verstappen for the title. While he hasn’t been as critical of the Mexican as ousted Alpha Tauri driver, Nyck de Vries, it’s pretty clear he doesn’t hold the Mexican in high regard.

So who can beat Max Verstappen?

According to Helmut Marko, there are only two drivers on the current grid that can beat Max Verstappen. They are fellow multiple world champions: Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Marko was quick to add that even they will find it difficult to do it in equal machinery. He suggested that would need a car slightly better than the Red Bull to beat Max.

This statement comes only a few days after Sergio Perez said that 90 percent of drivers would fail to beat Max. The Dutchman is enjoying a vein of form only a few others in the sport have achieved. And according to Helmut, it’s not just Max, but the entire team that is fast. He pointed out to DAZN how they make almost no mistakes, have near-perfect pit stops, and everyone in the team does an incredible job.

Helmut Marko was quick to downplay his team’s chances of winning every race this season. He did say, however, that they hadn’t thought they will be able to win the first 12 either. If they win the rest of the races, it will be huge for both Red Bull and Max Verstappen, who would be expected to win most of the remaining 10 races.
