Notably, Mercedes have been poor all throughout the season as they have not adjusted well to the 2022 regulations, but the Imola Grand Prix on Sunday was when Lewis Hamilton’s problems were compounded. The seven-time world champion was stuck behind Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly at P13 for a long time, and also had to swallow a very bitter pill when rival Max Verstappen lapped him.

Toto Wolff immediately apologized to the British driver, as according to him, the Mercedes car is currently in an undrivable state. “Hi Lewis, Sorry for what you have had to drive today. I know this is undrivable and not what we deserve to score as a result. This was a terrible race. We will come out of this,” said Toto over the team radio.
Hamilton sounded calm on the radio and encouraged the team to keep working hard, but according to the murmurs from the paddock, he could already have started looking for better options. Winning the world championship for a record eighth time remains Hamilton’s ultimate ambition, and in the current Mercedes car, it seems impossible.

Interestingly, while Hamilton struggled massively at Imola, his teammate George Russell drove a fantastic race and finished P4. This has led many to believe that the problems are not with the car itself but possibly Hamilton has not got his grips yet, with the Brit’s former teammate Nico Rosberg also raising the same question.
