Red Bull Cost Cap Breach: Formula 1: According to the Ferrari team principal, Red Bull’s great start to the season is somewhat because of the lenient penalty they received last year, the consequence for exceeding Formula 1’s cost cap that they had previously breached. All ten teams had already turned in their financial reports for the 2021 campaign. Later, in autumn 2022, it was discovered that Red Bull was the only team to spend more than the $145 million cap on each outfit.

It was shown that the team initially went $1.8 million above the budget. The total overspent was almost $400,000 after the FIA accepted the team’s justification for a tax credit issue.

In late October the FIA announced the punishment for breaching the cost cap of formula one. The team was given a $7 million fine and forfeiture of 10% of their budget for aerodynamic development.

In spite of the punishment, Red Bull has an amazing head start in the 2023 season. They won each of the season’s first three races with an RB19 that seemed to be the best vehicle on the track.

Ferrari team boss, Fred Vasseur thinks that the punishment was a little too easy on them. In an interview, Vasseur stated that the punishment could have been a little severe for breaching the cost cap.

“I think it was not a penalty,” said Vasseur when asked if he was surprised that Red Bull has overcome it. “It was very low. If you consider that basically, we will improve a bit less than one second over the season in terms of aero, you get the penalty of 10% of this, it’s one tenth”, Vasseur said.

Vassuer claimed that Red Bull had an advantage since they spent more than the previous year.

“I’m not sure that the effect is mega. And if you consider that you have an advantage at the beginning of the season because you spent more the year before.”
