According to Marko, Verstappen’s aggressive style of driving is not coming in handy with the 2022 car, given how it is aerodynamically set up. “Max finds it harder (to drive the 2022 car). He hasn’t found the right balance yet. Therefore, he doesn’t have the fullest confidence in the car. His aggressive driving style doesn’t quite go together with the new cars,” said the veteran advisor.

“Perez is much closer to Max than was the case in 2021. The simplest explanation for this is the new cars with less downforce suit some drivers better and others less. Sainz is an intelligent, very hard worker. In Australia, he was closer, but then he was unlucky with the red flag and later with the steering wheel. Perez is very happy with the set-up of the car,” he further added.

Marko further went on to say that Red Bull are having the ‘inverse’ issue to Ferrari this year after Formula 1 presented progressive new technical regulations for 2022. Meanwhile, the two Scuderia drivers usually were very close to each other on the track in 2021, while Max Verstappen enjoyed having an upper hand over his teammate Sergio Perez.

In the initial three races of 2022, Charles Leclerc has enjoyed the upper hand over the striving Carlos Sainz. However, Verstappen has battled to put any distance between himself and Perez.

Asked about how Red Bull are stirring to keep Verstappen’s inspiration up after such a rough beginning to his title guard, Marko says that the group have been attempting to show him the setting of two retirements over such a long season.

“His youthful age is predestined for impatience. I told him we still have 20 races left, with over 500 points up for grabs with Sprint races and fastest laps. Nothing is lost,” he explained.
