The current Grand Prix’s power unit cycle will come to an end by the year 2025. Then the sport will see its next-generation engines. It will be based on a less complex and less expensive regulation-based platform.

It has also attracted the interest of many other big brands. The two major brands are Volkswagen-owned owned, Audi and Porsche.
The future power unit in Formula 1 will not feature the costly and complicated MGU-H hybrid element. But, it will be including the new MGU-K component. It has a capability of 350 kw/h (476 bhp) of power. Plus it will bring a significant boost from the current 120 kw/h (163 bhp) threshold.
The increase in electrification is the main feature of attracting new manufacturers such as Peugeot. From 2026, Formula 1’s aim is to move to a 100% sustainable fuel.
The Stellantis Group has committed themselves to the World Endurance Championship with their 9X8 Hypercar. But, the Peugeot group delayed their entry. It was because they wanted to give themselves more time to develop the car. Plus they wanted to secure their reliability ahead of the 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours race.

However, Peugeot is not pleased with WEC’s implementation of the Balance of Performance (BoP) rule. It is because the Hypercar and LMDh categories were given a lower budget cap. Plus, the lower budget cap for these two categories was enjoyed by the LMDh. Peugeot is having second thoughts about its long-term presence in WEC.

The Stellantis Group is personally commissioned by chief executive officer Carlos Tavares. He said that the commitment to F1, where electrification is moving forward will make good sense for a brand like Peugeot. Meanwhile, it will be more cost-effective and will provide a better return on investment than their WEC program.
If Peugeot has to make a move to F1, then they will have to shed out a $200 million entry fee. This fee will be given to the existing teams on the grid. Carlos Tavares is taking a keen interest in Peugeot’s F1 dreams for 2026. On top of it, Carlos is personally backing the project.
Kevin Magnussen, before his comeback in F1, was included in Peugeot’s Hypercar program. He had committed to them that he can be called to develop their car and also race it in 2026.
