Meanwhile, all 10 teams are continuing to work on finalising their design ahead of the pre-season testing in Barcelona. They even have good knowledge of how their cars are going to perform on the track.

After the launch of RB18, Red Bull’s new car, which was launched on Wednesday is not the final finished product. However, Pierre Wache believes one big factor of the year ahead will be the straight-line speed performance.

The switch has been made from the cars which generate more downforce from the wings. It has now gone to the ground effect concept, which has led to a big reduction in drag.

Wache said, “What they wanted to do was to create and generate more downforce from the ground. Compared to before, where it was generated by the ground but mainly by front wing, rear wing, and the bodywork.”

Finally, the RB18 of Red Bull has been launched for the 2022 season

“It will affect the ride of the car, the mechanical grip and the drag of the car too. This generation of downforce is quite efficient. This type of car should be a lot quicker on the straight at these levels of downforce.”

Red Bulls chief technical officer, Adrian Newey reckons the changes that teams have had to work on are the biggest for almost 40 years in motorsport. He further added, “It has been a very unusual process. It is a huge regulation change and the biggest we have seen since 1983. The flat bottomed cars were introduced and the Venturi cars were banned.”

Another change that teams are getting to know is that the nose of the car will be a lot longer. Also, the 18-inch wheels will have a lot of catching up to do with knowledge.

Paul Monaghan, the chief engineer said, “The nose box is certainly bigger than the last cars. So wherever you put your split for front of chassis into the structure at the front, that structure has gone a lot longer. Even the overhang is greater now.”

“With the tyres, the thinking is road relevance. Nowadays plenty of cars have big wheels which also come with pretty low profile tyres. The 18-inch tyres have put a bit of weight onto the car. The tyres are bigger and have a fairly significant aerodynamic effect.”

“Now you’ve got the characteristics of the big tyres to try and understand them as well. We certainly have knowledge of the last year’s ones. It is a bit of a new drawing board for us.”
