In the Dutch book ‘Formula Max’ which has been published by the Dutch motorsport.com site, Helmut Marko told that Red Bull approached things in a different way than Mercedes.
Helmut Marko said, “Of course, we knew that Max was talking to Mercedes as well. But with Mercedes, he couldn’t have made his debut at an early stage in his life.” It was the time when both Red Bull and Mercedes were on talking terms with Max Verstappen.
“Mercedes will never take risks with a newcomer. My plan to sign him and put him in F1 straight away wasn’t to outdo Mercedes. It happened simply because I saw that he is ready for Formula 1 and that turned out to be the case. Red Bull is different from Mercedes. We have more of a ‘no risk, no fun’ kind of mentality.”

Red Bull was the team that signed Max Verstappen and got him into Formula 1 when he was just 17 years of age. This decision by Red Bull drew criticism at that time and Marko believed that Red Bull has taken the right decision.
Marko added, “The criticism was expected but it was a calculated risk. We had given Max all the appropriate tests at Toro Rosso within the regulations. He made his first FP1 appearance at one of the most difficult circuits, Suzuka Japan. It was good to see how he had dealt with such a difficult track.”

Marko further said, “It was good preparation for his first F1 season. It’s always a risk because drivers who are successful in junior categories don’t necessarily have to be successful in Formula 1. During my conversation with him, I was convinced that he is ahead of his time. He was physically and mentally strong for F1. We never doubted our decision.”
“Max had a more experienced team-mate at Toro Rosso with Carlos Sainz. He had much more experience at the junior level. But, Max immediately started at the same level. He has matured with time. Now he is more calm and composed.”
