Lewis Hamilton’s participation in this year’s Formula 1 remains doubtful after a heartbreaking end to the last season. He was on the course to winning his eighth F1 title but in the latter part of the race, Max Verstappen snatched the victory.

But, the Brit driver was back at the Mercedes factory on Monday and Tuesday this week. He was seen completing the pre-season tasks required to race if he plans on doing so. He had also shared some videos of himself doing physical training and preparation in London.

Hamilton’s movement in recent days shows that he is preparing for the upcoming season. But that still doesn’t confirm anything that he will be racing this year.

The 37-year old is still waiting on the outcome of the inquiry into the last season’s finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He will then make a final decision on his commitment to F1 this year.

It was the Race director, Michael Masi who failed to follow the rules correctly in administering a late safety car period. His actions in the latter part of the race led to the loss of Hamilton.

He hasn’t spoken publicly since the race. But last week he posted a picture on his Instagram handle with the caption, “I’ve been gone. Now I’m back”. The events of Abu Dhabi have left Hamilton disappointed. He has also lost the trust in the FIA.

The F1 drivers will be speaking to the representatives of the governing body this week. They will discuss mainly the events of Abu Dhabi and what can be learned from Masi’s mistake. The FIA single-seater boss Peter Bayer will then discuss the inquiry’s findings with President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

Both of them will then give their recommendations to the F1 president Stefano Domenicali. Also to the teams at the meeting of the F1 Commission early next week, on Monday 14th February. Till then, Hamilton will not decide whether to return to Formula 1 this year until the findings are revealed.

One main key issue for all of the F1 fraternity is the future of Michael Masi. Peter Bayer in an interview last month hinted that Masi will not start as the race director this year.

The responsibilities of the race director will now be split between a number of people. Meanwhile, many big personalities in F1 consider that retaining Masi as race director would not be the right option.

A new structure will be put in place for whoever is in the role. It will ensure the race director has more support and is able to take the decisions in the right frame of mind.
