In the article of 2022 regulations, 55.13, the word ‘any’ has been replaced by ‘all’. The rule now reads, “If the clerk of the course considers it safe to do so, and the message ‘lapped cars may now overtake’ has been sent to all competitors using the official messaging system, all cars that have been lapped by the leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the safety car.”

It was Michael Masi, the then-race director who took the controversial decision to restart the race. He had allowed a portion of the lapped drivers to rejoin the lead lap.
Masi allowed five cars that were separating Hamilton and second-placed Verstappen to rejoin the lead lap. There were two cars between Verstappen and the third-placed Carlos Sainz, also one more car further back. They were not allowed to unlap themselves.
Formula 1 New Rules: FIA has changed F1 rules on lapped carsAs soon as the race restarted, Verstappen overtook Hamilton on Turn 5 and clinched his maiden Formula 1 title. Mercedes immediately protested the outcome. It stated that Masi has failed to respect the regulations. Masi allowed a portion of the field to rejoin the lead lap.
Mercedes’s protest was rejected. Max Verstappen’s victory was counted. But, the stewards felt the other way round. In their verdict, they said that article 48.12 of the 2021 regulations “may not have been applied fully” at that very time.

Formula 1: Other changes to the post-race celebrations
There has been a slight change before the start of the much anticipated 2022 F1 season. Now, drivers have to stay in their overalls for the post-race celebrations.
The rule reads, “For the duration of the podium ceremony and post-race interview procedure. The drivers finishing the race in first, second and third positions must remain attired only in their driving suits, ‘done up’ to the neck, not opened to the waist.”
“For the duration of the TV pen interviews and FIA post-race press conference. All drivers must remain attired in their respective teams’ uniform only.”
Max Verstappen was fined last year at the Brazilian Grand Prix. He had touched the rear wing of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes car in the Parc Ferme. New rules read like, “Drivers must not interfere with Parc Ferme protocols in any way.”
