Formula 1: Mercedes reveal new safety cars: Mercedes have revealed its updated safety and medical cars for the Formula 1 2022 season. It comes before the season opener on 20th March which will take place in Bahrain. Follow Formula 1 Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.

Christoph Sagemuller, head of the motorsport of Mercedes-AMG GmbH said, “Since 1996, that’s every single year for more than a quarter of a century. Mercedes-AMG has been supplying the vehicles Formula 1 needs in emergencies.”

“In their role as Official F1 Safety Car, our performance vehicles have been safely leading the Formula 1 field around the track when called upon in bad weather or in the event of an incident. When needed, our Official F1 Medical Car is on the spot as quickly as possible.”

“To ensure this, we have upped the ante even further for the 2022 season with our most powerful models to date. The AMG GT Black Series and the AMG GT 63 S. What’s more, their on-track performance displays their unfiltered motorsport DNA more than any of their predecessors.”

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series will be the official safety car for half of the races in 2022. Mercedes will continue to share their duties with Aston Martin. The Black Series will replace the Mercedes AMG-GT R. It was supplied as the safety car last year.

Whereas, the C 63 S Estate which was used since 2015 is replaced by GT 63 S 4MATIC+. According to Mercedes, both cars are the most powerful editions of these vehicles.

One change on the new safety car is the removal of the light bar which was previously on top of the roof. It has been replaced by the new light signaling system that is built into the windscreen. It will also feature on the rear spoiler as well.

Meanwhile, the rear number plate will also have relevant colours to signal the drivers during the race. The lights on the side windows will help the spectators to see when the safety car is about to come in the pits.

The safety car driver Bernd Maylander will be supported by co-driver Richard Darker. Richard has access to two monitors with all the race information and TV footage. It will help him to keep track of the F1 field while being on the track.

Both the safety and medical cars will feature a red livery which was adopted by Mercedes last year. It will also feature Crowdstrike as its sponsor. On weekends, Mercedes won’t supply the track vehicles.

However, on those days Aston Martin will have their cars serve the duties. It will be Aston Martin Vantage and DBX SUV as the safety and medical car.

The second pre-season will take place in Bahrain from 10th to 12th March. The season will kick start in Bahrain as the first race will take place on 20th March.
