Formula 1 Hungarian GP LIVE: Esteban Ocon wins, Vettel, Hamilton take podium, Verstappen down at 10th- Follow Live Updates-
Alpine’s Esteban Ocon clinched his maiden Grand Prix win as he beat Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton to the top spot at the Hungarian Grand Prix. In what turned out to be a thrilling race, Ocon gained an early lead and stayed there until the end, while Hamilton, who slipped to 14th, managed an excellent recovery to finish on the podium.
Five drivers were eliminated in the first lap as Valtteri Bottas wiped out Lando Norris and Sergio Perez, while severely damaging Max Verstappen’s car. Lance Stroll, also locked up and took out Charles Leclerc, who spun around Daniel Ricciardo, with Bottas, Perez, Norris, Stroll and Leclerc all forced into retirement as the race was red-flagged.

Lewis Hamilton was ahead starting on pole, but disaster decision making from Mercedes saw the 35-year-old out on the for the standing start on intermediates as the entire rest of the field pitted for mediums. Hamilton pitted later and fell behind the rest, with Esteban Ocon taking a surprise lead with Sebastian Vettel in close pursuit. It was Ocon’s first single-seater win since 2015, and Vettel’s second P2 of the season.
Hamilton who had slipped to 14th made a scintillating come back to seal the final podium slot. The Mercedes ace was denied a chance at Ocon by Alpine’s Fernando Alonso, who put on a defensive masterclass for seven laps to deny Hamilton the time. The British star did eventually overtake Alonso and Sainz, who had occupied third for most of the race but did not have enough time left to leapfrog Ocon.
Pierre Gasly was sixth for AlphaTauri, ahead of teammate Yuki Tsunoda, while Williams claimed their first points since the 2019 German Grand Prix, with Nicholas Latifi taking P8 ahead of George Russell in P9, with Verstappen rounding out the order, at the end of one of the most epic Grands Prix in recent memory. The Red Bull did not recover from the opening lap damage and hobbled throughout, in what was yet another disappointing race for Red Bull.

Lap 70: Esteban Ocon wins the Hungarian Grand Prix, Sebastian comes second, with Lewis Hamilton finishing third on the podium.
Lap 67: Hamilton goes past Sainz into the podium places but Ocon and Vettel look unassailable in the top two. Nonetheless a brilliant recovery from Mercedes, with Hamilton coming back from 14th.

Lap 11: Esteban Ocon maintains his lead, with Sebastian Vettel cutting his lead to just 1.1 seconds. Hamilton is struggling at 13th and has been asked to cool down his brake temperature. Verstappen has overtaken Pierre Gasly, moves up to 11th.

Formula 1 Hungarian GP LIVE: Qualifying- Lewis Hamilton seals pole, Bottas second, Verstappen slips to third
Lewis Hamilton reigned supreme and will start the Hungarian Grand Prix after he pipped teammate Valterri Bottas and championship rival Max Verstappen to seal bragging rights. The 35-year-old, who will be chasing his 100th win on Sunday, sealed the deal with a stellar lap in Q3 topping his teammate and Verstappen to seal the 101st pole of his career. Mercedes had their strategy on point during qualifying and could well extend their dominance into Sunday as they will start on the mediums.
Verstappen had the advantage after Q2, but Mercedes duo Hamilton and Bottas simply outplayed him in Q3 as he slipped to third. The Red Bull ace will be disappointed at conceding advantage and will need something special to pull off a Grand Prix win in Hungary. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez managed to finish fourth, despite failing to cross the chequered flag before the final lap. Hamilton raced out of the pits very slowly, which ensured that Perez couldn’t improve on his 4th place.
Pierre Gasly improved to a fantastic fifth ahead of Norris. Charles Leclerc pipped Esteban Ocon to stay sixth, with veterans Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel rounding out the top 10. Carlos Sainz earlier crashed into a corner in Q2 and the race had to red-flagged, meaning he couldn’t finish. Mick Schumacher, who suffered a nasty crash in FP3, did not participate.

Max Verstappen finished as the fastest in Q2, topping with a sensational 1m15.650s. Vettel sneaked into the top 10, while Lewis Hamilton and Valterri Bottas were trailing in the wake of Red Bull. Lando Norris finished second, closely followed by Pierre Gasly, with Fernando Alonso making the top five.

Formula 1 Hungarian GP LIVE: Carlos Sainz crashes out
Carlos Sainz suffered a major setback as he crashed into the last corner of Q2. The Ferrari ace, who had started well, managed to keep the engine going but suffered a broken wing and the race had to red-flagged to remove the car and the debris.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton set a marker for qualifying with the fastest time in final practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen in second and Valtteri Bottas in third. The session was briefly red-flagged for Mick Schumacher’s late crash into the Turn 11 barriers.
Schumacher lost the rear-end of his Haas coming out of Turn 11 with 17 minutes remaining, resulting in a high-speed accident from which he emerged winded, apologetic, but unhurt – his presence in this afternoon’s qualifying session now hanging in the balance as the Haas team assess the damage to his car.
Bottas held the benchmark of 1m 17.428s midway through the session, leading Verstappen by 0.082s and Hamilton by seven-tenths before drivers scrambled to set times following the red flag for Schumacher’s crash – when Hamilton rallied to set the ultimate fastest lap of 1m 16.826s and finish 0.088s ahead of Verstappen to leave Bottas third and 0.229s down.

On Friday night, Ferrari broke curfew for the first time this season to change Carlos Sainz’s engine. No penalty for the Spaniard who finished fourth in FP3 and 0.02s ahead of team mate Charles Leclerc in fifth.
McLaren’s Lando Norris was left with a feeling of consternation after a “tough” FP2 session on Friday and finished sixth in FP3, while team mate Daniel Ricciardo was eighth, the Red Bull of Perez splitting the McLarens.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas ended second Friday practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix as the fastest driver, heading his teammate Lewis Hamilton by a narrow 0.027s – with a disgruntled Max Verstappen third for Red Bull, nearly three-tenths off the ultimate pace.
Bottas has never taken pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix, in comparison to the seven poles of team mate Hamilton here. But the Finn spent the whole of Friday as the quicker of the two Mercedes drivers, clocking a fastest time in FP2 of 1m 17.012s, with Bottas fastest in the first two sectors – as Hamilton claimed the fastest time in Sector 3.
Esteban Ocon said on Thursday that a change of chassis had restored his confidence in his Alpine A521. And Ocon proved that emphatically with P4 in the session, 0.747s off the ultimate pace, and ahead of the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez, who complained of vibrations on his soft tyre set.

After celebrating his 40th birthday yesterday, Fernando Alonso ended up seventh, ahead of the Aston Martin of Sebastian Vettel, whose early move to softs paid dividends, as he finished P8. Lando Norris was ninth as the leading McLaren, ahead of the second Aston Martin of Lance Stroll, completing a double top 10 showing for the team in green.
Ferrari had been predicted to be strong at a Hungaroring track often described as being like Monaco without the walls – and with Charles Leclerc having taken pole in Monte Carlo earlier this year. But after Carlos Sainz’s P4 in FP1, neither he nor Leclerc could crack the top 10 on Friday afternoon, Leclerc going P11 and Sainz P12.
George Russell took 15th for Williams, shadowed by team mate Nicholas Latifi some two-tenths off. After Tsunoda, Haas’ Mick Schumacher was 18th, ahead of the Alfa Romeo of Antonio Giovinazzi in 19th as Nikita Mazepin took 20th in the second Haas.
So, with Red Bull having gone fastest on Friday morning, Mercedes turned the tables on Friday afternoon. But with thunderstorms threatening to arrive on Saturday, there’s plenty of uncertainty still to come this weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Hamilton was a mere 0.027s further back, the seven-time champion having overcome a brief off at Turn 9 and a violent snap of oversteer at the exit of Turn 11, before finishing ahead of title rival Verstappen. The Dutch driver had finished fastest in FP1, but appeared unhappy on team radio in FP2, complaining that his car was “so understeery, it’s incredible”, as he wound up 0.298s off Bottas.

Meanwhile, Valtteri Bottas and reigning champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Top 3 finish. Carlos Sainz of Ferrari and Pierre Gasly of Alpha Tauri also made it to the Top 5.
Championship leader Max Verstappen set the fastest time in sweltering conditions in first practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix, ahead of Mercedes pair Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton. The session was briefly red-flagged for Yuki Tsunoda’s Turn 4 crash with 18 minutes left.
Verstappen, running the Honda engine that sustained the 51G impact in his Lap 1 crash at the British Grand Prix, was fastest out of the gate with hard tyres at the Hungaroring and switched to softs after Tsunoda’s red flag. He set the fastest time of 1m17.555s, clear by just 0.061s.
Valtteri Bottas was briefly top as the first driver to use soft tyres, but his time was eclipsed by Verstappen’s with 10 minutes remaining and the Finn finished P2. Lewis Hamilton was a tenth off his team mate in third, complaining of understeer early in the session.
Carlos Sainz took P4 for Ferrari with the Scuderia expecting to top the midfield here, wihle team mate Charles Leclerc took P7. Between them was fifth-place AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly and Alpine’s Fernando Alonso – celebrating his 40th birthday this weekend – shrugging off an early Turn 4 spin for P6.

In the other Red Bull, Sergio Perez finished 0.911s behind Verstappen in P8 ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris who bucked the trend and started running on mediums rather than hards, switching to softs to finish ninth late on. McLaren team mate Daniel Ricciardo took 14th overall. The MCL35Ms sported flow-vis paint in FP1 to assess the efficacy of McLaren’s new bargeboard and floor updates for Hungary.
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll finished 10th, ahead of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon.
Rookie Tsunoda (P12) suffered a Turn 9 spin and compounded that with a Turn 4 off, which saw his session end as he careered rearwards into the barriers to bring out a brief red flag with 18 minutes remaining.
Four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, wearing a special Pride helmet for this weekend, finished 13th, ahead of Ricciardo (P14). The Williams pair lined up 15th and 16th, George Russell ahead of Nicholas Latifi, while Mick Schumacher took P17 for Haas.
Alfa Romeo’s stand-in Robert Kubica took over for Kimi Raikkonen in FP1 and finished 18th, behind him Haas’s Nikita Mazepin. Antonio Gionvinazzi was last for Alfa Romeo, having been confined to the garage for much of the session with a technical issue.
