Formula 1: Will F1 have 11 teams? The owner of Formula 1, Liberty Media has cleared the air about having an extra team on the grid and have said that there is ’no pressing need’ for having the eleventh team. Notably, Michael Andretti is very interested to start a new team of his own, but it seems unlikely as of now. Follow Formula 1 Updates on InsideSport.IN.

On being asked about whether F1 can have more than 10 teams on the grid, Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei explained “Historically there has been as many as fifteen or twenty teams on the grid. It got down to ten right when we entered the sport. Manor, which was the 11th team, went into receivership in the UK, went into bankruptcy and got sold for a pound.”

“There is a potential that we may increase the teams over time. But I don’t think it’s a pressing need. There are a lot of people who would like us to do it. Most of them want to buy in, but we haven’t felt that need,” Maffei further cleared his stance by saying.

The CEO further explained that if there is an eleventh team on the grid, then it would pose problems for the sport in many areas such as pits, paddocks, and logistical issues. “The paddocks, the garages, there’s some places that really don’t have more than ten garages. So their challenge is literally around the dynamics of putting an 11th team on the track,” Maffei concluded.

Talking at the end of the week, Andretti and his father Mario seemed certain that nearly everything is set up for them to enter F1 in 2024. However, given the plans of Liberty Media, the emergence of the Andretti F1 team is not looking like a possibility.
