The rear wing also changes as it is more curved. The front wing is also different from last year. Wheels will now have wheel covers which will help keep the airflow clean. 2022 car features fully shaped underfloor tunnels, rather than the stepped floor used currently.

2022 car is a lot cleaner, especially around the area on either side of the cockpit. The current bargeboards and other bits of aerodynamic furniture are seen on the 2021 car. It is used to tweak and cajole airflow along the car – no longer form part of the design.

The 2022 Formula 1 season will have 23 races in it. The season starts on March 20th in Bahrain. It will also see the return of some iconic tracks like Singapore, Australia and Japan.

Here are some key changes for the 2022 Formula 1 car.

A ground floor effect: The 2022 car has two long underfloor tunnels with will create a ‘ground effect’. It means, it will now have more suction under the car to pull it to the tarmac. It will also ensure more downforce is generated from under the car. This concept was famous in the ’70s and ’80s in Formula 1.

The 2021 car was different from this. It didn’t have a ground floor effect. The 2021 cars lost 35 per cent of their downforce within three car lengths of the car in front. And, almost 50 per cent in a single car length. You may have heard the words ‘dirty air’.

Simplified front wing and a sharp new rear wing: The designs look great. They are designed in a way that stops sending airflow outwards. It will instead narrow it. The rear wing is also changed and is now more curved. It will still have DRS but it may be less impactful.

This is done basically for more wheel to wheel racing. The 2022 cars are designed in a way that every driver gets a fair chance of overtaking or even driving more closely.

18-inch tyres with wheel winglets: Another addition to the 2022 cars are the big 18 inch tyres. They are aesthetically pleasing and will improve the handling of the car as well. The winglets have been added to help direct air away from the rear wing.

The 2021 season cars had 13 inches tyres on them. But the 18-inch tyres will have an impact on the track. They are on the heavier side and will pose difficulties for the pit stop timings.

All in all, the 2022 cars are almost very different from the 2021 cars. The new aerodynamics will come into effect and change the racing style. It will now feature a more close racing between the cars.

The cars have totally changed from the 2021 season and the drivers will test the cars in the pre-season testing at Barcelona and Bahrain. The Barcelona pre-season testing is from 23rd to 25th February and Bahrain one is from 10th to 12th March.
