Vettel told Auto Motor und Sport, “I have my opinion. I think very highly of Mick. I’m not entirely objective because I’m very close to him. But I do think he’s a great driver and he’s a learner.”

“He keeps learning when others stagnate or stop progressing. He has qualities, but he’s also still very young, he doesn’t have a lot of experience,” Vettel added.

Meanwhile, when Vettel joined the sport he looked up to Michael Schumacher as his mentor. But as time passed by both became good friends on and off the track as the legendary driver shaped Vettel.

Likewise, the German driver was one of the most welcoming to Mick when he joined Formula 1. Maybe that is the reason he believed the young driver should take a quality jump and have his spot at Aston Martin.

Moreover, last Thursday, Vettel reported that he was retiring to invest energy with his loved ones. Thus, his seat was empty for a couple of days and he proposed that Aston Martin should get Schumacher to replace him. But, Aston Martin already had Fernando Alonso at the top of the priority list.

If Mick decides not to drive for Haas next season then his options are quite tight given the current state of the grid and the already confirmed seats for the respected drivers.

Moreover, Aston Martin wanted Sebastian Vettel to make a call on his future before the summer break begins. Auto Motor und Sport Tobias Gruner reported that the team already had a Plan B in their mind.

“Negotiations between the team and the driver [Alonso] have apparently been taking place in the past few weeks. That’s why Aston Martin recently approached Vettel to ask him to make a decision on his future before the summer break,” Gruner added.

Meanwhile, Aston Martin announced the signing of the two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso on Monday after the Hungarian GP got over as the teams and drivers headed into the summer break.
