Initiated by the former boss Andreas Seidl in 2019, the project saw significant delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Completing the deadline of summer 2023, the hardware of the tunnel is almost ready and the actual development is expected to start in June. However, the team needs to wait until the calibration is over.
After McLaren missed its targets in the Bahrain Open, McLaren wanted to cover all the deficiencies of the draggy MCL60. “The wind tunnel alone is not enough to justify the fact that the car is where it is. We could have done a better job independently of the wind tunnel. Now, this is something we are reviewing.”

The first major upgrade is scheduled for Baku, followed by smaller updates for both Saudi Arabia and Australia. Even though the tunnel will be a major development, Stella made it very clear that he expects the team to make progress using its current tools and resources.
The new wind tunnel will replace McLaren’s current one, which is rented from Toyota in Cologne. But the team is very disappointed with the arrangements of the delivery. With a fast business like Formula One, losing days for delivery isn’t very helpful. Nonetheless, it is clear that McLaren sees the new wind tunnel as an important tool for improving their performance in F1.
