Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso are undoubtedly the most welcome surprise of the 2023 F1 season. The Silverstone-based team stands second in the constructors’ standings with a slim 1-point lead over Mercedes. In 2022, the team collectively managed just 55 points with a 7th place finish in title battle. Meanwhile, it already stands on 120 after just six rounds of racing so far. A huge credit for this goes to the highly superior upgrade packages the team launches periodically and of course the relentless driving of Fernando Alonso. The team like many others brought certain upgrades in Monaco. Lawrence Stroll-owned team sported a revised suspension set-up. Moreover, they tweaked brake ducts to improve airflow over the rest of the car and increase brake efficiency and cooling. Now, for Alonso’s home race, the team is tweaking certain other aspects of the car. Notably, the Spaniard’s 32nd and last race win came on this track in 2013 for Ferrari.

After a decade, Alonso again finds himself in a competitive car and this time he would be looking to make the most out of it. Fans and F1 juggernaut is eagerly waiting to see the Spaniard on the top step of the podium. With 5 podiums under his belt already, he looks all set to add another jewel to him crown at home race. Highly important in this regard will be the constant improvements in the AMR-23, adjusting to tracks and also generic updates.

The Spaniard is not just an exceptional driver but also a highly skilled reader of the car. Putting his experience of 300 plus GPs to use, he is an important part of car evolution process. For Spanish GP, the team quite a few adjustments to the car. At the front, the wing flap and endplate have been reprofiled to improve the downstream airflow. Meanwhile, at the rear, the wing endplate tip has been changed and more material added to increase overall performance.

In a recent interview, Alonso opened up about the necessity of these upgrades. “We’re bringing always new parts to the car. Some of them are just circuit specific. Sometimes it’s just an improvement in lap time. So yeah, I’m happy with how we are approaching every race, there is something always new in our car. We try to keep up the pace with the top teams,” said the Spaniard.

“We still need to speed up things. I think Ferrari is already two floors into this season, Mercedes was obviously a completely new car in Monaco and (the team has) more upgrades here. Red Bull, [had a] Baku package and another one here,” added Alonso.
