Fernando Alonso Slams Canadian GP Management After FP1 CCTV Debacle On Friday

Due to an inadvertent delay, the FP1 was canceled. Valtteri Bottas topped the charts in the bizarre and truncated session.

The 2023 Canadian GP weekend is underway at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit in Montreal. As per the schedule, the two practice sessions were conducted on Friday, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell sealing the top 2 spots in the second session. The first session was cut short after Pierre Gasly’s Alpine sudden stoppage caused a Red Flag just three minutes into the session. Recently, Fernando Alonso recently gave his two cents on the disappointing situation.

However, that wasn’t the sole reason for the loss of almost the entire first practice session. Even after the Frenchman’s Alpine was towed out of the track, a synchronization issue with the local CCTV camera circuit caused further delay to the session. It is essential for the safe running of the cars because it helps monitor the on-track action as a whole. Thus, there was no question of going ahead with the session until the CCTV issue got resolved.

Due to an inadvertent delay, the FP1 was canceled. Valtteri Bottas topped the charts in the bizarre and truncated session. To compensate for the lost time, F1 and local management decided to extend the second session by 30 minutes. The audiences who had to sacrifice the live action during the first session must be thoroughly satisfied with this decision. However, Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso found it embarrassing that a technical fault cost them an entire session.

Fernando Alonso stood up for fans missing Canadian GP action on Friday

The Friday practice sessions have a huge relevance for the teams and fans enjoy them as well. It’s the first time cars taste the circuit and feel the turns and corners closely ahead of the race. So when the first session was canceled, it was disheartening for teams and fans both. The extension in FP2 timings came as a relief to the vising fans. Moreover, it was very essential for the team to get some good running for the optimization of data and make amends overnight for better qualifying.

Fernando Alonso, who set up the fourth fastest time during the FP2 session, talked about the technical hindrances after the session.

“The fans came very early to the circuit, and we were not able to run in FP1. From time to time we are shooting in our feet as a sport, these things are a little bit embarrassing. We didn’t have time because in FP1 the cameras of the circuit didn’t work, and we didn’t have a Plan B in this sport,” said the Spaniard.
