One of the major obstacles which every team faced was the issue regarding the ground effect which led to cars bouncing on the straight, popularly known as ‘Porpoising’. Several teams hit problems on Day 2. The most notable was Williams, as Nicholas Latifi suffered that dramatic brake fire. Haas had to end its session early due to an exhaust problem, while Aston Martin lost time with a stoppage and Valtteri Bottas’ Alfa Romeo brought out the final red flag.

F1 Pre-season Testing Live: Timings of Day 2

Turn 10 of the track was a thorn for almost every racer. Some of the noticeable drivers who locked up and went off track were Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. The first pre-season was held in Barcelona from 23rd to 25th February. It had lots of talking points in it but the major one was Porpoising. Teams suffered porpoising on the straights when they were at high speeds.

  • The timing screen clock counts down to zero and finally, the red flag is shown. Now 2022 Formula 1 Pre-season Testing finally is over. Mick Schumacher replicates his teammate’s efforts of yesterday’s running and clocks second best timing for the day. Well done Haas after going through such a hard time.
  • Mick Schumacher has ventured out on the track again.

  • Now 71 laps on the board for Mick Schumacher, who clocks a lap time of 1m32.241s and that is the second-quickest of the day. He has made an impression after his teammate Kevin Magnussen being the fastest on Day 2.

  • Mick Schumacher heads out again now. He’s only done 11 laps since the rest packed up their tools for the day.

  • Max Verstappen’s 1m31.720s is the fastest time from the official testing over the three days. He ends up 0.695s faster than Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who also set his best time on softs but earlier in the evening, with George Russell third for Mercedes.

  • Fernando Alonso pops up in third with a lap time of 1m32.698s on the soft tyres. He takes the third spot from Mercedes’s new signing, George Russell.

  • Yuki Tsunoda now jumps to the fourth position on his soft tyres, clocking a lap time of 1m33.002s.

  • George Russell has improved again posting a lap time of 1m32.759s but remains third overall.

Thanks to the support from home we were able to do some longer runs this morning. From what we have seen from the car, on the runs we could do, we have a healthy platform but we have failed to tick a lot of boxes in these three days due to the limitations. Let’s focus on ourselves, get these problems sorted, and see where we are next week.”
  • Lando Norris in the press conference today said, “Less than ideal. Although I have done two and half days it has not been the smoothest of tests. I think Barcelona was a good one but here we have encountered quite a few more problems that have limited the laps we have done by quite a huge amount. We are behind from where we want to be and need to be. It is not great but we are getting through as much as we can, we are definitely making progress, but it is definitely not the position we want to be in.”

  • Carlos Sainz is back out on the tracks running on the medium tyres. He’s over a race distance too in terms of laps.
  • Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal says, “Tyre degradation, the brakes – all will be a factor. The drivers are having to adapt, learn the characteristics of these cars but it is amazing how quickly the drivers do adapt”

  • Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal says, “Perez seems to be happy with the characteristics of the car and his lap time at this time of the day looks reasonable. It seems to be behaving as we hoped for. The one consistent thing is that every time the Ferrari is on track, it looks competitive. Mercedes haven’t shown their hand yet, the car looks a handful to drive. The form book is impossible to predict.”
  • Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly have been showing us a glimpse at how cars can travel closely when following each other. It means new regulations have made a very positive difference to the following.
