F1 Canadian GP: Charles Leclerc could be handed a 10-place grid penalty in Canada: Charles Leclerc isn’t enjoying his time behind his Ferrari single-seater in 2022, owing to recurring technical failures. Things got really out of hands in Baku as the Italian team saw both their drivers retire from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver is driving a significantly unreliable vehicle, which is costing Ferrari significant points. To rub salt in the wounds of Leclerc, he could be facing grid penalties in Canada due to different turbo power unit (PU) disappointments.

This punishment is in accordance with the FIA rules, which permits just three power unit changes in a season. Furthermore, if the power unit failure in Baku is sufficiently serious, Leclerc will get a 10-place grid penalty in Canada for changing his power unit again.

Having said that, if Ferrari uses their old power units then they can stay away from the penalty in the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix. However, it will be too big of a gamble which the team from Maranello should not ideally be interested in.

F1 Canadian GP: Charles Leclerc registered his second DNF in the last three races.

The team principal of Ferrari Mattia Binotto addressed the power unit issue after Azerbaijan GP and said, “We need to understand what happened, so it’s really early right now as I said the engines and the power units will be back to Maranello. We will analyze, investigate, and pretty sure we’ll find as a team a solution as the team is proved it’s capable of addressing the problem and we will do it for the future.”

In the last three races, Leclerc has retired twice and due to this, he has dropped down to the third spot in the drivers’ standings. Both his retirements were due to turbo and power unit failures. Ferrari seriously needs to find a solution to their problems if they have to fight for the titles this season.
