Red Bull boss Christian Horner and Mercedes Luminary Lewis Hamilton share a positive sentiment about the upcoming races. This is primarily in terms of a stiffer competition that has started to appear on the grid lately with more teams coming closer in terms of pace. The process of reaching this goal kickstarted almost two years ago. The 2022 F1 season saw a significant overhaul in regulations, arguably the biggest this sport has seen in decades.
The new-generation cars are fundamentally different from their predecessors. Back in the day, FIA introduced these changes to achieve a fair and more competitive F1 grid. As a critical difference, modern car designs have simplified top-body aerodynamics and a more neutral front wing. This was implemented to tackle the dirty air and enable close racing.
Soon after the new regulations were put in place, Red Bull appeared to be the fastest of the lot. As we have seen in the past, the team that interprets the newer regulations earns their domination on the grid. This is much like the Mercedes’ story during the turbo-hybrid era. However, after a plethora of upgrades and aerodynamic work, the teams have finally started to get closer to the front-runner Red Bull.

Christian Horner and Lewis Hamilton Credit 2022 Regulations for better racing
Formula 1 is inherently a sport where the pace of a car pretty much dictates the performance. Though drivers’ skills are utmost paramount, what happens in the factory decided much of the on-track results. This being said, when the regulations are left stable for a while, teams start to catch up eventually. The best example of the same is Red Bull in the 2021 season.
After the sheer dominance of Max Verstappen in the last two seasons, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Aston Martin are now pushing their way to the top. Recently, Red Bull boss Christian Horner and Mercedes man Lewis Hamilton opened up about the same.
“What I would say is that this is one of the most exciting times I think we’ve seen in the sport where we’re finally starting to see the regs pull people closer. You’ve seen the Williams was up there with [Alex] Albon. You’ve seen the McLarens now, the Astons – so we have a lot of teams getting very, very close. So I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the year evolve,” said Hamilton as reported by Planet F1.
“The one thing that we know from this sport is that things will converge – you can already see it starting to happen. The most important thing to have convergence is stability. And stability in regulations will bring all of the teams much, much closer together. So you can see it’s already starting to happen,” said Horner in affirmation.
As it seems, In another season’s time, fans are expecting a tough fight at the front. And this is without a doubt something that every F1 fan is looking forward to, much like what we saw in 2021.
