Bahrain Grand Prix 2022 Qualification Live: Hamilton-Verstappen rivalry heats up: The Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen rivalry will once again take center stage as the battle heats up before Qualification on Saturday in Bahrain. Charles Leclerc goes quickest after setting a lap time of 1m30.558s. Max Verstappen is second after setting a lap time of 1m30.681s. Carlos Sainz is third after setting a lap time of 1m30.687s. Mercedes this year are not quite looking like themselves, but with Hamilton at the wheel, one cannot count the silver arrows out. Their car is really not up to the mark and this is where Red Bull cashed in. Along with Red Bull, Ferrari have also taken the fight to Mercedes this year. Red Bull and Ferrari look like they have got a hang of their 2022 cars.

  • Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal says, “Ferrari have been strong all winter, you could see it was going to be tight between the two teams. Max had a little wobble in the last corner, and the margins are so fine. Starting on the front row after a big regs change, I’m happy with that.”

  • Carlos Sainz says, “I’m quite happy with the progress I’ve done through the weekend. I’ve been very far off, more than half a second behind. So even to be fighting for the pole is good for me. It’s deserved, Charles has been ahead all weekend and he deserves the pole.”

  • Max Verstappen says, “I think it was a bit hit and miss, Q2 seemed good, Q3 was more of a struggle to get the balance together. We have a good race car, which overall is the most important. A few things to look into and we’ll try to do better next time. It was nice, a close battle with Carlos and Charles. Hopefully, it’s going to be a good race.”

  • Charles Leclerc after securing the pole position says, “It feels good, the last two years have been incredibly difficult for the team and we knew this year’s rules would be an opportunity for us. I am very happy today in a tricky qualifying session, I wasn’t happy with my driving.”

  • Kevin Magnussen comes to a stop at Turn 1 which brings out the yellow flags at the end of the Q3 session. But it won’t impact anyone with all the lap times set.

  • Q3 session has concluded and both the Ferrari drivers have managed to finish in the top three.
  • Charles Leclerc goes quickest after setting a lap time of 1m30.558s. Max Verstappen is second after setting a lap time of 1m30.681s. Carlos Sainz is third after setting a lap time of 1m30.687s.

  • Carlos Sainz goes fastest with a lap time of 1m30.687s. Charles Leclerc is second after setting a lap time of 1m30.731s. Max Verstappen is third after setting a lap time of 1m30.743.

  • Pierre Gasly also comes out on the track.
  • Both Red Bull and Ferrari have joined Mercedes out on the track.
  • Both Mercedes drivers are the first ones to be out on the track.
  • Q3 session gets underway.

  • Esteban Ocon, Mick Schumacher, Lando Norris, Alex Albon, and Guanyu Zhou have been eliminated after the Q2 session.
  • Q2 session has ended.
  • Carlos Sainz moves to P2 after setting a lap time of 1m30.787s.

  • Kevin Magnussen has a hydraulics issue with his Haas.
  • Lewis Hamilton is placed P5 and his new teammate George Russell is P6.
  • Kevin Magnussen is really pushing his car to the limit as he is P4 after setting a lap time of 1m.31.461s.
  • Charles Leclerc is second with a lap time of 1m31.356s. Sergio Perez is now third with a lap time of 1m.31.377s.

  • Max Verstappen goes quickest after setting a lap time of 1m30.757s.
  • A rule change for 2022 means the tyres the drivers progress from Q2 on now won’t be the tyres they start the race from.
  • Williams Alex Albon is the only driver out on the track. He is currently running the soft set of tyres.

  • Q2 session gets underway.

  • Yuki Tsunoda, Nico Hulkenberg, Daniel Ricciardo, Lance Stroll, and Nicholas Latifi are out and will not be a part of the Q2 session.
  • Q1 session has ended.
  • 17 drivers are on the track with the top three of Leclerc, Sainz, and Verstappen confident of their Q2 progression.

  • Ferrari is leading in the Q1 till now with a 1-2 finish.
  • Charles Leclerc goes fastest after setting a lap time of 1m31.471s. Carlos Sainz is second with a lap time of 1m31.567.
  • Kevin Magnussen goes second after setting a lap time of 1m31.919s.
  • Max Verstappen goes the quickest after setting a lap time of 1m31.909s. Sergio Perez is now second after setting a lap time of 1m32.383s.
  • Pierre Gasly goes quickest after setting a lap time of 1m33.016s. Yuki Tsunoda is second after setting a lap time of 1m33.581s.
  • Pierre Gasly, Yuki Tsunoda, Nicholas Latifi, and Alex Albon are out on the track. They have been joined by Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo.
  • The Qualifying session (Q1) gets underway.
  • Toto Wolff says, “You always need to see the positives, even in a situation that looks worse than expected. We’ve been here before.”

The qualifying session will start at 20:30 IST today. The qualifying session is divided into three parts, Q1, Q2, and Q3. Q1 lasts 18 minutes and has all 20 cars on the grid. At the end of Q1, the five slowest cars are eliminated. Drivers who finish 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 are eliminated.

Q2 session lasts for 15 minutes and has 15 cars on the grid. Again the slowest cars are eliminated from 11th to 15th position. Q3 lasts for 12 minutes and has 10 cars on the grid. The position in which the drivers finish in Q3 will be their starting grid positions for the race.

In the FP1 session, Pierre Gasly topped the timesheet after setting a lap time of 1m34.193s. It was then followed by Ferrari drivers Leclerc and Sainz. Charles Leclerc had a lap time of 1m34.557s and Carlos Sainz had a lap time of 1m34.611s.

In the FP2 session, it was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who topped the timesheet. He had set a lap time of 1m31.936s. Ferrari again had a great outing in the FP2 session as they finished 2nd and 3rd once again. Charles Leclerc was second after setting a lap time of 1m32.023s. Carlos Sainz was third and he had set a lap time of 1m32.520s.

In the FP3 session, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen again set the timesheets on fire. He finished P1 and had set a lap time of 1m32.544s. Second place again went to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc as he set a lap time of 1m32.640s. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished P3 and set a lap time of 1m32.791s.
