Formula 1: Aston Martin F1 team is undoubtedly the most welcome surprise of the 2023 season so far. With Red Bull far ahead at the front, Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso have come up as a formidable force in second place. The Spaniard is a regular at the third step of the podium this season, a total of 4 times out of 5 outings. The team stands at the second spot in the constructors’ championship, ahead of Ferrari and Mercedes. Follow Formula 1 Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.
The team, after finishing 7th in the constructors’ standings last year, the team has made a major turnaround, pipping everyone’s expectations by the mile. The duo of Alonso and Stroll have managed some exceptional outings, the former more often than the latter. However, they have not had a convincingly superior car when talking about raw pace. At instances, they have found themselves kept at bay by Ferrari and Mercedes drivers.
Many fans are even crediting the team’s success to the sheer skill set and raw pace of Fernando Alonso. The 41-year-old is still a force to reckon with when given the wheel of a competitive car. Especially when compared head-to-head with teammate Stroll, he has outpaced him in every race so far and stands 48 points ahead of him in just 5 races. More recently, Aston Martin technical director Dan Fallows opened up about their current situation and future advances, especially in terms of their lag with Red Bull.
Still a “little way to go” to compete with Red Bull: Dan Fallows
Dan Fallows is one of the ablest men in Formula 1. He previously served as head of aerodynamics in the Red Bull team and achieved a tremendous stint with them. Because of many former Red Bull employees in the team, fans and drivers often compare the new Aston with RB19 in terms of design and chassis. However, putting those inferences side, Fallows recently opened up about the car development in the team. Moreover, he also discussed the time it will need before it can compete with the mighty Red Bull.
“We do we need to sort of consider where we are relative to Red Bull. But I think there are areas we believe where we’re relatively strong. The Red Bull as a concept has been evolved for a bit longer than ours. We obviously very publicly went to a different concept early last year. We are still developing that,” said Fallows.
“We think we’ve made a very big step this year, but we still have a little way to go. And I think honestly, I wouldn’t point to sort of one single area of it. I think we just need to improve everything, really,” added the Briton.
