The Monegasque driver, who currently leads the Drivers’ standings this year said, “I lost the brakes. I lost the brakes! I braked, the pedal was hard, and it went to the floor. I was lucky to have it at that moment because if I had had it at another place, it was no good. The problem is that I got scared. I arrived normally in the corner.”

However, after experiencing unforeseen brake disappointment during his third lap on the track, Leclerc contributed to a twist and struck the barriers in reverse, which later on dislodged the rear wing.

Though he tried to initially get moving once more, Leclerc later gave up and pulled up on the main straight. It was smoke drifting from the rear of his vehicle before he got out to assess it.
Meanwhile, talking straight after the episode, Leclerc was certain that the accident was not down to the driver’s mistake, but rather had something to do with a mechanical failure.

In a close-up picture taken by Autosport, it was visible that the brake disc had come free from the front left caliper. With no halting power on the left front corner of the vehicle, the brakes would have snatched altogether on the right side, leaving Leclerc powerless.
