Formula 1 News: Red Bull have confirmed that the Honda boss Masashi Yamamoto has been recruited as a consultant for the 2022 Formula 1 season. He will be the consultant for Honda’s powertrains for the season. Follow F1 2022 Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.

Masashi Yamamoto was the one who convinced Honda to stay in the F1 after a difficult time with McLaren. After the stint with McLaren, Honda committed their future with Red Bull. Yamamoto was also present when the Japanese manufacturer won the drivers’ World Championship with Red Bull in the form of Max Verstappen.

The Japanese manufacturer will be supplying complete power units not just for this season but till the new power unit regulations come in 2026.

Honda will leave Formula 1 after a seven-year stay as the company wants to fully focus on going carbon neutrality. Red Bull will start making their own engines in the form of Red Bull Powertrains. During the transition, Red Bull will run a power unit developed by Honda.

After Honda announced they are departing from Formula 1, Yamamoto found a way to remain in the motorsport as he enjoyed working in the paddock.

Yamamoto shares a strong relationship with both Christian Horner and Helmut Marko of Red Bull. Horner and Marko were keen on working with Yamamoto as a future tie-up made sense.

Formula 1 News: Yamamoto’s work in the Red Bull team

Masashi Yamamoto has decided to leave Honda this month as he has taken the role of an independent consultant to the Red Bull team.

Yamamoto will wholly and solely focus on the comms with the staff working on the engines. Many people from Honda have made a move to the new power unit division of Red Bull and the Japanese manufacturer ensured a smooth transition.

The Japanese manufacturer will be supplying complete power units not just for this season but till the new power unit regulations come in 2026.

There are still talks between Honda and Red Bull and no agreement is yet in place. But if both the companies reach an agreement, then Red Bull can fully focus on their first works power unit which will be coming out in 2026. Meanwhile, Honda will take care of the build and supply of the current generation.
