The decision to hold its ambitions comes after the close deal with Red Bull led nowhere. The team was concerned mostly about its independence, which might be lost after they sign the deal with Porsche. However, the latter has still expressed its interests to have an evaluation of their options, especially after the new 2026 sustainable fuel rules.

“Motorsport will always be at the core of our brand identity, and Formula 1 remains an interesting racing series for us,” the team issued a statement. This shows how Porsche has really locked the doors to F1 and is still waiting for a better receiver at the other end. But with the current commitments with other sports like FE, WEC and IMSA, it doesn’t look like Porsche has a clear plan of action for upcoming years.

With the retirement of Fritz Enzinger, vice-president of motorsport, the efforts have been pretty slow. Enzinger is known to be the pioneer of the Formula One initiative at Porsche. But since December 2021, this topic has been locked in the trunk with the retirement of the man. Even the personnels assigned by Enzinger have been reassigned to other projects. This indicates the lack of seriousness in Porsche, which clearly means no entry for the upcoming few years.

But here is the twist. Since its negotiations with Red Bull reached nowhere, Porsche has now been approached by McLaren, with Audi partnership, once again. The latter has approached the German manufacturer, for the automotive division and not primarily for the racing. The new CTO, Michael Leiters seems to use his 13 years experience and contacts at Porsche, for a collaboration. The ex-Ferrari guy is having an idea of developing joint editions with Porsche and Audi.

McLaren has already acquired a 25% stake in the Sauber team, taking ownership of Audi’s factory team for the 2026 season. Now the Ingolstadt based company is trying to influence Porsche also.

There will be fierce competition among teams for Porsche, in 2026. But currently, it looks like McLaren partnership is the only brand placing the bets on Porsche.
