Formula 1: Fernando Alonso in Aston Martin is hands down the most welcome surprise of the season already. Amidst the peak dominance of Red Bull, the Spaniard is a regular at the third step of the podium this season so far. Fans are loving every bit of Alonso’s charge at the front, giving new F1 fans a taste of his vintage days. Many F1 juggernauts second-guessed his decision to move to Aston Martin last season, which finished 3 steps below his then-team Alpine. Follow Formula 1 Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.
Initially, the consensus was the big bucks that might have ensued the deal, and his deteriorating relations with teammate Ocon. However, what we have seen this season so far was far beyond anyone’s imagination. The two-time world champion has proved his metal repeatedly whenever he gets a competitive car, which is the case this season. Out of the five races so far, he has finished on the podium four times. Alonso currently stands third in the drivers; standings with 75 points, ahead of both Mercedes and Ferrari drivers.
However, at 41, he remains the oldest driver on the grid, and speculation around his future are always around the corner. Recently in an interview, he opened up about his dilemma of the “temptation” to say or to finish on a high.
Fernando Alonso feels “fresh, fast and motivated”
The Spaniard has been on the grid for long enough to see every high and low the sport has to offer. He has been a part of legacy teams like Ferrari and Mclaren at the heights of their powers and then with midfield teams like Alpine as well. Now, he is back in a car that can compete for regular podiums and he is making the most of it. The Spaniard, in a recent interview, opened about his goals and future, though on offering a certain answer.
“Things seem to be going better than we expected this year and maybe that means being tempted to extend the contract in the future. But there is also the temptation to finish, and do it with a smile on my face. I don’t know, honestly,” said Alosno to Spanish newspaper Marçà as reported by GPFans.
He further added that he is motivated to add more wins to his career tally, especially if competing at this age.
“I feel fresh, I feel fast, I feel motivated. Whether it’s two, three, four or however many years, I don’t know yet. To be in F1, you give up family, life and friendships so it has to be worth it. Especially at the end of my career, I want to fight for something important again,” added the Aston Martin driver.
