Australian GP HIGHLIGHTS
At the initial race start, Verstappen was out-raced by both George Russell and Hamilton. The Safety Car then made two fast visits as a result of Alex Albon’s severe crash and Charles Leclerc’s retirement following a collision with Lance Stroll.
The race returned to the pits after a further red light for Albon’s incident, with Hamilton leading Verstappen and Alonso and taking advantage of Russell and Carlos Sainz’s unfortunate decision to switch to fresh tyres just before the stoppage.
Verstappen quickly moved back into P1 and within DRS range after having a free choice of tyres for the restart, but Russell’s misery was only made worse by what appeared to be an engine issue.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won the last edition of the Australian GP in 2022 and will be hoping to replicate the performance this year despite struggling in the first two races. Talking about the qualifying, Max Verstappen drew level with Fernando Alonso by taking his 22nd career pole position in qualifying for the 2023 Australian Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Mercedes’ George Russell qualified second and his teammate Lewis Hamilton ended up third on the grid.
