Bottas who finished seventh overall in the Canadian GP said, “We’re not at the peak. I can see that and the people know it, that we still have so many things that we can do better. At least we know for a team like this, with the budget cap it makes things so much more equal.”

“So you know as a fact that there’s opportunities, like in the past if somebody had £200m more budget than you, it would be a bit of a mountain to climb. But now it’s realistic that we can do better than this and in the future we can score podiums, we can even fight for race wins. I truly believe that, but that needs a lot of work and that’s why I’m here,” Bottas added.

The Finn was with the Silver Arrows for a long time and needed to expand his stay, however, the group concluded new blood was required and advanced George Russell from Williams. After such faithful assistance, Mercedes were quick to keep Bottas in the sport and assisted him with getting his current seat at Alfa Romeo.

He set it all up, scoring eight points at the Bahrain Grand Prix and expanded his record of Q3 appearances to past 100. That record streak has since reached an end, yet Bottas has scored points in every race but failed to do so in two races up to this point, to develop a sum of 44 which has him eighth in the standings.

Regardless of showing the capacity to score well on most race ends of the week, Alfa Romeo are some way off having the option to contend with any semblance of Ferrari and Red Bull for race wins. Yet, Bottas accepts that probably won’t stay the case anymore as the group has a decent ‘base execution’ whereupon it can be built further.

Formula 1: Valtteri Bottas has had a great start to the 2022 season.

The 51 points scored so far is now more than Alfa Romeo oversaw during the whole 2021 season and a mark of how well the group has adjusted to the new era of technical guidelines. Bottas conceded even he had not expected a portion of the outcomes he has overseen after so brief a period with the group.

“Results wise, no big expectations for the first year but actually, we realised pretty quickly that once we had the reliability, with the car we actually have pretty good base performance. Some tracks we’re really almost up there fighting with the big teams and that’s been so amazing in a way that it’s not maybe something I quite expected for the first year, but I knew the potential was there,” Bottas concluded.
