Barcelona has confirmed that Gavi has sustained a ligament tear in his Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The news comes after the midfielder left Spain’s match against Georgia in the first half on Sunday. The test results could spell doom for Barcelona coach Xavi and his team, with Gavi being ruled out for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old was stretchered off in tears after sustaining a knee injury just 26 minutes into the match against Georgia. It ended in a 3-1 home win for the hosts at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla in Vallodolid.

Barcelona statement on Gavi

The official communication from Barcelona this afternoon confirmed the worst-possible outcome.

Tests carried out this morning have shown that first team player Gavi has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the external meniscus,” the statement read and added the midfielder will undergo surgery in the coming days.

Barcelona are awaiting confirmation on how long their star player will be out. Although it is expected that he will be out for a period of seven to nine months.

The injury is a mounting worry for Barcelona, who will be entering a crucial run of games after the international break. Barca need another win in their Champions League group stage to qualify for the round of 16. Xavi’s men sit at the third spot of La Liga table, four points behind leaders Girona and two points adrift of second-placed Real Madrid.

The injury to Gavi has the ability to derail Barcelona’s season. With another youngster Pedri just returning from an injury, Xavi has a big task in hand. The challenge for Xavi would be to construct a midfield that could replace the Spanish youngster for a considerable period of time.
