Pique believes football lovers will remember Barcelona’s triumphs during his time compared to Real Madrid’s successes.
In an interview with RAC1, the World Cup winning defender has said, “Real Madrid transmit little but they get results and in February, they will be alive in all competitions. They have won 13 or 14 Champions Leagues, but when we win, it is remembered forever. The last Champions League they won was a miracle because they were inferior in every stage and in the final. It will never be remembered.”
Notably, Real Madrid has 14 UEFA Champions League titles in their trophy cabinet. They have also been voted as the Club of the 20th Century. Gerard Pique also revealed that he has only spoken with his ex-teammate and present Barcelona coach Xavi once in the past year.
“On the day of the League celebration, he told me if he wanted to go. I said no. I haven’t spoken to him since I folded.”
Xavi the right man: Gerard Pique
Barcelona on Tuesday faced a shock 1-0 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League Group stage. A win would have ensured qualification to the knockout rounds but Xavi and his men squandered the chance. However, Pique placed his trust on Xavi and claimed he is the right man to take the team forward.
“As long as there are solutions, you have to be patient. Xavi is from the house, he has been there for many years, he has learned the way of playing, and right now there is no one better to turn this around and play well again. I think it is what is indicated,” Gerard Pique said.
