WHU vs MUN: Premier League: Manchester United suffered a shocking 0-1 defeat against West Ham United on Sunday. The only goal came in the game came after United’s goalkeeper David de Gea let Benrahma’s ill-timed shot through his hands and into the net. The Spanish keeper has been guarding the sticks for the Red Devils since 2011 and has been known for some blunders. However, manager Erik ten Hag insisted he does want David de Gea to stay despite the error in the game. Follow Premier League LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN

Erik ten Hag refrained from giving David de Gea the boot after his appalling error handed Manchester United their ninth League loss of the year. More than any other goalkeeper in the top tier, the 32-year-old Spanish international has now made nine mistakes that have directly resulted in goals during the last two seasons.

Erik ten Hag’s words after David de Gea’s blunder

Boss Erik ten Hag insisted that this error doesn’t change their plans. He said, ‘We have the most clean sheets in the Premier League and we wouldn’t be in this position without him. Mistakes happen but he has my full belief and I have no concerns about him. We want him to stay and extend his contract.’

He continued, ‘Nothing changes. We could have made it easier with a result but we need three wins in four games and everything is still in our hands. We started well, created chances and dictated the game but then just like at Brighton in midweek one individual mistake cost us. We have to learn to stay calm and composed. We had some chances but we have to create more.’

Erik ten Hag ended by saying, ‘Now, for the first time since Christmas, we have a full week to reset, reload and get the energy back to keep going. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. What we need is for everyone to stick together, for individuals to take responsibility and if we play as a team we will get the points we need.’

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand also chipped into the conversation. He said, ‘De Gea has made a mistake today but that’s not the area I question him. Is he good enough a footballer to play for Manchester United?’

Captain Bruno Fernandes also defended his teammate saying, “We don’t need to focus on that mistake. He’s saved us so many times.”

The Red Devils are in a precarious position in the Premier League right now. They are in fourth place and are just one point ahead of Liverpool. Even though United have a game in hand, a couple of blips at this stage will be fatal to their charge at the UEFA Champions League places. Safe to say, the end of the EPL is building up to be a close one.
