Hamza Choudhury is a name that is currently gaining a lot of attention in South Asia. The Bangladeshi player is set to make his debut for Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. Choudhury was born to a Grenadian father and a Bangladeshi mother and was raised in a traditional Muslim household. His football journey began in England, where he made a name for himself playing in the Premier League with 2016 league winner Leicester City F.C.
Football journey and achievements
Choudhury started his professional career with Leicester City, a club known for competing at the highest levels in England. Since his senior debut in 2017, he has made 131 appearances for the club. One of his notable achievements includes being part of the team that won the FA Cup in 2021. Currently, on loan at Sheffield United, he continues his journey in English football, gaining valuable experience and levelling up his skills.
Joining the Bangladesh National Team
Hamza Choudhury decided to represent Bangladesh, the land of his maternal roots. His decision to switch allegiance came after playing for England’s Under-21 team. In August last year, he obtained a Bangladeshi passport and made his switch official in December. His arrival in Bangladesh was celebrated with much excitement, and he received a hero’s welcome in Sylhet.
Hamza Choudhury: A threat for India?
Choudhury’s presence in the Bangladesh team is expected to make a meaningful impact. As Bangladesh gears up to face India in the Asian Cup Qualifiers on March 25, Choudhury brings his Premier League experience to the team.
This would be hard for the Indian players, as they compete in leagues like ISL; and they don’t have the experience to face players who have played top-tier football in Europe.
Hamza expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s chances against India, stating, “Inshallah, we will win. I’ve spoken with coach Javier (Cabrera) about many things. Inshallah, we will win and progress.” With his skills and international experience, Choudhury hopes to inspire Bangladesh to new heights in the football world.
