On October 16, 2023, the Euro 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden was called off at halftime. The match was called off when two men were shot dead in the street seconds before their team’s qualifying game. A third person was also taken to the hospital. Sweden’s players decided not to restart the game after the half-time break, with the score 1-1. It was also agreed upon by the Belgian players. 

The outcome of the Belgium vs. Sweden Euro 2024 qualification match is unknown. UEFA has verified that more communication will take place in due time. It is unclear whether any other Euro 2024 qualifier games will be impacted and/or suspended.

Following the game’s cancellation, the Swedish FA resorted to social media to express their sympathies during the atrocity that happened in Brussels.

According to a post by the Swedish FA, “our thoughts go out to all the relatives of those affected in Brussels.”

“Following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided, after consultation with the two teams and the local police authorities, that the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden is cancelled,” UEFA said in a statement. “Further communication will follow in due course.”

Security agencies and ministries have assembled at a Crisis Centre since the horrible incident, amid suspicions of a terror motivation. The terror danger level in the Brussels Capital Region has increased to category four. Officials also advised residents to “avoid unnecessary movements.” The danger level denotes the probability of a terrorist strike. Level four is assigned to regions “when the threat is serious and very imminent.”
