We have a chance: Midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad opens up on India’s AFC Asian Cup 2023 knockout hopes

Midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad remains optimistic about the Indian Football Team's chances in the AFC Asian Cup 2023 despite consecutive defeats against Australia and Uzbekistan

Indian Football Team midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad expressed the team’s determination to give Syria a tough challenge in their final AFC Asian Cup match. Despite facing consecutive defeats against Australia and Uzbekistan, India aims for a crucial victory against Syria on January 23, which could secure a spot among the top third-placed teams and advance to the Round of 16.

“We just have to make sure that we do well in the upcoming game, and get the three points,” Sahal said, echoing the team’s determination for a positive outcome in the crucial match against Syria.

Sahal emphasized the team’s focus on securing three points against Syria, acknowledging the opponents as formidable. He mentioned Sandesh Jhingan’s encouragement, stating that India has a chance if they beat Syria. Sahal emphasized the team’s commitment to giving their best and winning the upcoming game.

“We are looking at the other groups. Sandesh bhai had told us that we have a chance if we beat Syria who are good opponents. We are just working on that. We just hope we do our best and win the next game,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of playing as a team, Sahal noted that each game presents a new opportunity. He expressed the team’s intent to make it challenging for Syria, emphasizing the need to defend and enjoy the game collectively.

“Every game is a new chance. We are down in one game then we have another opportunity in 3-4 days. We will give them a hard time. We need to be ourselves, play as a team, defend as a team and enjoy the game,” Sahal said.

“Both teams would want to win the game so it’s down to who wants it more. Hopefully, we get the three points and we qualify,” he added.

Providing an update on his fitness, Sahal mentioned ongoing efforts with physios, doctors, and coaches to recover. While not completely back, he expressed hope of being ready for the next game, promising to give his 100% if given the chance to play.

“I’m still not completely back. With the help of physios, doctors and coaches, I’m still trying to be back. Hopefully, I might be ready for the next game,” Sahal said.

“If I get a chance, I’ll make sure, I’ll give my 100% to win the game. It’s not about me but about the team. I won’t be happier to be back soon,” he concluded.
