Wednesday night’s Copa America semi-final between Colombia and Uruguay ended in dramatic fashion on the pitch, but it was the scenes that followed the final whistle that truly stole the headlines.

Violence in Copa America stands

Colombia emerged victorious after a hard-fought 1-0 win secured by a Jefferson Lerma header from a James Rodriguez cross. However, celebrations were cut short as a violent altercation erupted in the stands where Uruguayan and Colombian supporters were intermixed.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, a prominent figure throughout the tournament for Uruguay, found himself at the heart of the chaos. Footage shows Nunez and his teammates entering the stands, where a clash with Colombian fans ensued.

The Associated Press reported that it took over 10 minutes for police to regain control, with the public address announcer urging fans to leave the stadium.

Video replays painted a disturbing picture. Players and fans were seen exchanging blows, with what appeared to be punches being thrown amongst the crowd. Objects, including drinks, food, and other projectiles, were also launched back and forth between the opposing factions.
