Virgil Van Dijk’s extra-time goal guides Liverpool to Carbao Cup triumph over Chelsea

Jurgen Klopp announced that he is set to leave the club at the end of the season after 9 years

Jurgen Klopp’s final season would end with one silverware for sure as Virgil Van Dijk’s extra-time goal secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

The tightly contested match, marked by VAR interventions nullifying goals for both teams, remained goalless after 90 minutes until the Liverpool captain’s header sealed the win.

Despite missing key players such as Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez due to injury, Liverpool, backed by their passionate supporters, bravely battled Chelsea. The triumph not only extends Liverpool’s record as Carabao Cup champions for the 10th time but also keeps alive their improbable quest for a quadruple.

While Chelsea initially struggled, they nearly took the lead through Cole Palmer, only to be denied by a remarkable save from Caoimhin Kelleher. Liverpool faced further challenges with Ryan Gravenberch’s injury, prompting Joe Gomez to enter the fray.

Both teams had their chances, with Raheem Sterling’s goal disallowed for offside and Liverpool hitting the post. Van Dijk’s apparent goal was nullified after VAR review, inspiring Chelsea’s resurgence.

As Klopp grappled with limited bench options, youngsters James McConnell and Jayden Danns were called upon. Danns, making his debut recently, came close to scoring but was thwarted by Petrović’s save.

Amidst Liverpool’s relentless pressure, Van Dijk’s header from a corner in extra time sealed their victory, epitomizing their determination and resilience in claiming the Carabao Cup.
