Virgil Van Dijk in Trouble! Liverpool Skipper could face further ban after red card vs Newcastle

After shouting and screaming profanity at the referee, Virgil Van Dijk could face a ban of more matches than his initial one, after red card vs Newcastle

Virgil Van Dijk: Liverpool could be in some trouble. Their comeback against Newcastle won’t be forgotten anytime soon. They were down to 10 men owing to Virgil Van Dijk’s red card and had their backs against the wall. Darwin Nunez scored twice, once in injury time to win the game 2-1. Now, The Football Association may decide to sanction Virgil van Dijk further after he appeared to call the referee’s decision to dismiss him on Sunday a “f***ing joke,” which may be considered disrespectful behaviour towards officials.

Virgil Van Dijk in trouble

In the opening period of Liverpool’s comeback victory over Newcastle, the Liverpool captain was shown a straight red card for a questionable challenge that prevented Alexander Isak from having a chance to score. Surprisingly, Darwin Nunez scored two goals off the bench to give the 10-man Reds three points.

Van Dijk is expected to receive a one-game suspension, but the FA may take further action against him for pointing in referee John Brooks’ direction. Additionally, he initially refused to leave the pitch while also appearing to use profanity. Van Dijk and fourth official Craig Pawson also looked to have heated exchanges.

Van Dijk disagreed and launched an inappropriate verbal volley at fourth official Craig Pawson, according to former referee Mike Dean of Mail Sport. Van Dijk can run into more issues with the football authorities depending on what is said in the referee’s report.

According to FA regulations, players who engage in “improper conduct” such as using harsh language may face additional sanctions. The FA rulebook specifies it will penalise “confrontational” behaviour, and numerous players have in the past received additional matches to their initial punishment for conduct towards officials after receiving a red card.

Jurgen Klopp on Virgil Van Dijk’s red card

Virgil van Dijk’s Sunday Premier League red card for a challenge on Newcastle attacker Alexander Isak was termed as “unbelievable” by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The Dutchman was fined for passing through his opponent to get the ball despite clearing it. Then, Isak was given a straight red card for denying him a clear chance to score.

Klopp said, ‘There is no active contact from Virgil van Dijk. It is just going for the ball and on the way there, he made contact. For this contact, getting three games, oh my God, unbelievable. We will see. For today, it gave us the chance to create something really special. The boys put up a proper fight.’

The following statement made by the Liverpool manager was incorrect since Van Dijk would only serve a one-game suspension rather than a three-game ban due to the circumstances of the punishment. Now though, after his outburst, his punishment could be extended. But he was still baffled as to why his captain ever received a red card.

He continued, ‘Virgil’s really thankful [that the team went on to win]. It’s all good. Players came on, Jarell Quansah came on. Joe Gomez came on early and played a super game, I’m really happy for him.’
