USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe set to hang boots after FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023

USWNT icon Megan Rapinoe has announced her retirement after the conclusion of the 2023 NWSL season and FIFA Women's World Cup 2023.

USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe, decided to retire after the conclusion of the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season. Rapinoe, who has achieved two Women’s World Cup victories, will also participate in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. The tournament is scheduled to take place from July 20 to August 20 in New Zealand and Australia.

“I’ve been able to have such an incredible career, and this game has brought me all over the world and allowed me to meet so many amazing people,” she said. “I feel incredibly grateful to have played as long as I have, to be as successful as we’ve been.” Rapinoe said.

“To have been a part of a generation of players who undoubtedly left the game better than they found it. To be able to play one last World Cup and one last NWSL season and go out on my own terms is incredibly special.”

Megan Rapinoe, a USWNT icon, has announced her retirement from professional football at the end of the current season. The 38-year-old, who is now training with the Stars and Stripes for her fourth World Cup, will retire at the end of the 2023 NWSL season.

Megan Rapinoe, at 38 years old, is an iconic and legendary figure in women’s soccer. She is considered one of the greatest female players in the history of the sport. Rapinoe’s illustrious career includes winning the World Cup twice with the US Women’s National Team (USWNT).

“I want to thank my family for being by my side all these years. Thanks to all my teammates and coaches all the way back to my first days in Redding, on to college at the University of Portland and of course thanks to U.S. Soccer, the Seattle Reign and especially Sue, for everything. I will forever cherish the friendships and support over the years in this game, and I am beyond excited for one last ride with the National Team and the Reign.”

She has represented her country in 199 matches, scoring an impressive 63 goals. Throughout her extraordinary journey, Rapinoe has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Best FIFA Women’s Player of the Year award, the Ballon d’Or, and the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year title. Additionally, she claimed both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot during the triumphant 2019 World Cup campaign.

Megan Rapinoe’s last regular-season game is on Oct. 6 at Seattle’s Lumen Field against the Washington Spirit. She aims to end her remarkable career by winning another World Cup with the USWNT before retiring and rejoining OL Reign for the remainder of the season.
