Since acquiring the social media platform, the billionaire entrepreneur from South Africa has implemented a variety of measures to monetize Twitter, one of which involves charging users for the verification badge.

What is going on with Twitter?

Following several delays, Musk proceeded to remove the verification status of all users who hadn’t paid their fees by April 20th. This included top athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo.

Erling Haaland, the Premier League star, was among the users who lost their verification badges, along with his Manchester City teammates Riyad Mahrez, Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Aymeric Laporte, and others.

Kylian Mbappe, who boasts 12.2M followers, and his PSG teammate Neymar were also among those who lost their verification badges. Lionel Messi does not have a presence on Twitter.

Although NBA superstar LeBron James had expressed interest in paying for the blue tick in the past, Musk has now announced that he will cover James’ subscription fee.

Cristiano Ronaldo was not a fan of Elon Musk’s Gredy Plan

After purchasing the platform for a reported $44 billion, Musk implemented a strategy to generate regular revenue from its users by introducing a monthly subscription system for blue verification badges.

This plan was implemented shortly after Musk’s takeover, and on April 12th, he tweeted a reminder to accounts that had not subscribed to the service, indicating that April 20th was the final day for “Legacy” blue tick holders and that non-subscribers would lose their verification badges.

The impact of this action is now evident on the platform as accounts are beginning to lose their blue ticks, including that of Cristiano Ronaldo. Although the Portuguese soccer star has not commented on the matter, it is clear that he chose not to purchase a subscription.
