Transfer News Live: Kieran Trippier to Newcastle; Coutinho to Aston Villa
According to various reports, including from Mail Sport, Aston Villa are trying to bring the Barcelona midfielder to the club during the January transfer window. The deal to bring the Brazilian back to England would likely be a loan until the end of the season. Current Villa boss Gerrard played with Coutinho for two-and-a-half seasons before leaving Anfield.
Coutinho left Liverpool to join Barcelona back in for a reported fee of around £120m back in January 2018 but his big move to the Camp Nou has not paid off. The playmaker has made just 106 appearances for the club and spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Bayern Munich.

The former Spurs defender wants to be closer to his family and is keen on working with Eddie Howe, the Newcastle boss who first signed him for Burnley nearly 10 years ago. It is a statement of intent from the club’s new backers, with Trippier set to be the first current England international to play for Newcastle since Andy Carroll in 2010.
Trippier has 35 caps and was a key member of Gareth Southgate’s squad that reached the Euro 2020 final last year. The signing is anticipated to be the first of many throughout the month at St James’ Park, with Eddie Howe also keen to add quality in key positions.
