A devastating stampede erupted at a football match in southern Guinea’s largest city, Nzerekore, on Sunday, resulting in the loss of dozens of lives, including children. It is being reported that almost 56 people were eventually killed in the unwanted incident.
Football match or a massacre spot?
The chaos unfolded during a local tournament between the Labe and Nzerekore teams, held in honor of Guinea’s military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya. The stampede was sparked by a disputed penalty decision, which enraged supporters and led to stone-throwing and tear gas deployment by security forces. The situation quickly spiralled out of control, with fans pouring onto the pitch and fleeing in panic. Video footage showed people scaling the high perimeter fence, desperate to escape the mayhem.
The aftermath of the tragedy has left the community reeling, with several critically injured victims receiving treatment at a regional hospital. The National Alliance for Alternation and Democracy opposition group has demanded an inquiry, criticizing the tournament as a vehicle for promoting the military leader’s “illegal and inappropriate” political aspirations. As the investigation unfolds, the entire world mourns the loss of innocent lives and seeks answers to prevent such a catastrophe from occurring again.
