Spain

Spain Football Team, eager to reclaim their European glory, are set to make a strong impression in Euro 2024. With a squad blending seasoned campaigners and emerging prodigies, La Roja aims to showcase their trademark possession-based football. Fresh off a successful stint with the Spain U21 side, Luis De la Fuente hopes to replicate that on the senior stage. He will hope to guide Spain to their first major trophy since Euro 2012.

De la Fuente’s selection for the Spain squad for Euro 2024 has sparked considerable discussion. In a surprising move, he has left out some established names like Marco Asensio, Gerard Moreno, and Pablo Sarabia. Instead, he has opted for a youthful, energetic squad. Barcelona’s young starlets Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi have earned call-ups on the back of a breakout season. Meanwhile, Fermin Lopez and former Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez have also earned maiden call-ups.

Anchored by a core group of players who have shone in La Liga, Spain’s team exudes both promise and pedigree.

Spain Euro 2024 Key Players and Profiles

Spain Euro 2024 Star Players

Ferran Torres

Some fans might question De la Fuente for taking Ferran Torres over Marco Asensio to Germany. But the Barcelona winger has been faithful to his country, with 18 goals in 40 appearances.

He has often received criticism during his time in Camp Nou. But he did score 7 goals in La Liga before a hamstring injury derailed his form. De la Fuente will hope that Torres finds his scoring touch soon if Spain hopes to put up a fight in the group of death.

Rodri

If Pep Guardiola, a man who knows a thing or two about playing in the midfield, says you’re the best midfielder in the world, few can argue otherwise.

Rodri, the midfield general for Manchester City, is indispensable for Spain. His exceptional ball-winning abilities, coupled with his precise passing and tactical intelligence, provide the foundation for Spain’s midfield.

Pedri

Despite a couple of seasons decimated by niggling injury concerns, Barcelona’s Pedri remains the talisman for his club and country. If he remains injury-free, he will certainly be one of the starters for Spain.

Barcelona might not be too thrilled to have him on the plane to Germany. But his creative spark and composure under pressure will be pivotal for Spain to dominate possession and break down stubborn defences.

Spain Euro 2024 Young Talents

Lamine Yamal

The 16-year-old sensation from Barcelona, Lamine Yamal, has taken the football world by storm. His dazzling dribbling skills, blistering pace, and mature decision-making belie his age.

He has already broken several records this season. That includes the youngest scorer in La Liga and the European Championship qualifiers. He could be one of the standout young talents in Euro 2024. Yamal’s ability to change the game with his creativity and flair will be an exciting aspect of Spain’s campaign.

Nico Williams

Nico Williams, the Athletic Bilbao winger, brings speed and unpredictability to Spain’s attack. At 21, he has already established himself as a key player for his club and country. He helped Athletic win their first trophy in 30 years.

Known for his pace, quick feet, and crossing ability, Williams adds a dynamic edge to Spain’s forward line. It makes him a potential game-changer in tight matches.

Pau Cubarsi

Meet Pau Cubarsi, the newest sensation in Barcelona’s ranks. At just 17, he’s already making waves in both La Liga and the Champions League, bringing a sense of calm and composure to Barcelona’s defense rarely seen in someone his age.

With Pau Torres missing from the Spain squad and Rodri likely to play in midfield instead of defense as he did in the  World Cup 2022, there’s a chance for Cubarsi to step up and play a vital role for his country.

Spain Euro 2024 Team Strategy and Tactics

Luis de la Fuente has rejuvenated Spain with his emphasis on dynamic, high-pressing football while staying true to the Spanish tradition of possession play. Often deploying a 4-3-3 formation, de la Fuente encourages fluidity in attack and solid defensive organisation. De la Fuente has been quite stable with his tactical ideas, relying on a 4-3-3 structure for most of his time in charge of the senior side. However, injuries to players like Gavi forced the manager to try his hand at a 4-2-3-1 formation, which he had used as the U21 manager, with a double pivot of Merino and Rodri.

Defensively, Spain boasts a mix of youth and experience. The combined experience of Laporte and Nacho makes for a formidable partnership at the back, with Carvajal and Grimaldo providing width and electric pace up front. The midfield trio of Rodri, Merino, and Pedri epitomises balance, combining defensive stability with creative flair. Up front, Spain’s trump card Morata is supported by the pace and skill of Torres and Omlo on their side, with Real Madrid ace Joselu waiting for his chance to shine on the biggest stage again.

Spain XI (4-3-3): Simón, Carvajal, Laporte, Nacho, Grimaldo, Rodri, Merino, Pedri, Torres, Morata, Olmo

Spain Euro Previous Performances

La Roja have a rich history in the Euros, with three championships to their name (1964, 2008, 2012). Their recent performances, however, have been mixed. After a disappointing exit in the Round of 16 in Euro 2016 and the semi-finals in Euro 2020, Spain aims to reclaim their throne in 2024.

Under de la Fuente, Spain has shown promise, notably in their convincing wins during the qualifiers. Despite a couple of rocky friendly results in March, the team’s blend of youth and experience, coupled with a refreshed tactical approach, gives Spanish fans hope for a deep run in the tournament.

Spain Euro 2024 Match Schedule and Fixtures

Spain have been drawn into a challenging group alongside defending champions Italy, Croatia, and Albania. They begin their ‘Group of Death’ campaign against Croatia on 15th June, followed by a crucial clash with Italy on 20th June, and wrapping up the group stage against Albania on 25th June.

Spain Euro Historical Squads

Spanish football enthusiasts fondly remember the golden era of 2008-2012, when Spain dominated international football with their tiki-taka style. The core of that squad featured legends like Iker Casillas, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Fernando Torres. The Euro 2012 showed the world why Spain were considered the best national team at the time, with La Roja defeating an in-form Italy team to win the title.

More than the teams’ win, it was the nature of the win that impressed Spanish fans. Midfield magician Iniesta ran ragged over Spain’s opponents throughout the tournament, and his compatriot Cesc Fabregas made sure that Spain’s decision to play without a number 9 did not cause any problems. At the back, Casillas cemented his position as one of the best goalkeepers of all time, with the Real Madrid skipper conceding just one goal in the entire tournament.
