Germany

Germany football are not in great shape. They have faced a challenging period recently with consecutive World Cup group-stage exits. Germany also suffered a last-16 defeat at Euro 2020. As hosts of Euro 2024, the team approaches the tournament more with hope than expectation for a deep run. The Germany UEFA Euro 2024 squad includes three veterans from their 2014 World Cup-winning team: goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, forward Thomas Mueller, and midfielder Toni Kroos.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann has made several significant decisions for Euro 2024. Notably, Mats Hummels and Leon Goretzka have been left out of the squad. Additionally, Julian Brandt and Karim Adeyemi did not make the cut. Serge Gnabry, meanwhile, misses out due to a hamstring injury.

Germany Euro 2024 Key Players and Profiles

Manuel Neuer

For over a decade, Manuel Neuer has been the presumed No.1 for Germany. Heading into Euro 2024, he will be a key player. While he has not played for his country since 2022 after breaking his leg following the Qatar World Cup, he will be the one to watch out for. With 117 caps for the country, he’s widely considered one of the greatest goalkeepers ever.

Toni Kroos

Kroos’ decision to come out of international retirement has naturally grabbed the headlines in Germany. Kroos, with 108 caps, dictates the tempo of the game from midfield.  His vision, control, and passing are unmatched.  He pulls the strings with precise passes and dangerous set-piece deliveries. He even has 17 goals to his name in the German shirt.

Thomas Muller

Muller, Germany’s current highest scorer with 45 goals in 128 appearances, is a force to be reckoned with.  His exceptional movement, positioning, and finishing allow him to find space and create scoring opportunities.  He holds the record for most World Cup assists (10) and even bagged the Golden Boot award in 2010.

Germany Euro 2024 Young Talents

Florian Wirtz

The 21-year-old has been instrumental in Bayer Leverkusen’s undefeated title win, scoring 18 goals and providing 19 assists. As Germany’s young prodigy, he could be a key figure for the host nation at Euro 2024 with his dynamic attacking presence.

Jamal Musiala

Another 21-year-old Jamal Musiala has made a significant impact for Bayern Munich and Germany, ending the 2022-23 Bundesliga season with 12 goals and 10 assists. Despite injuries limiting his appearances in 2023-24, he still netted 10 goals. Musiala’s influence on the field makes him a key player to watch at Euro 2024.

Aleksandar Pavlovic

Aleksandar Pavlovic, a 20-year-old midfielder, has established himself in Bayern Munich’s first team. Although delayed by tonsillitis from debuting internationally, he is part of Germany’s provisional Euro squad. He is likely to earn significant playing time.

Team Strategy and Tactics

Nagelsmann hasn’t quite figured out his best formation yet. He used a back three against Austria in November, before switching to something resembling a Red Bull-esque 4-2-2-2 in a defeat to Turkey.

In March, though, a 4-2-3-1 proved immensely effective, with Kroos and Andrich forming an exciting double pivot, allowing room for an exciting attacking trio to run riot behind Fullkrug. Nagelsmann could make this his first-choice team come June.

Germany Euro Previous Performances

Germany has faced tough times, exiting at the group stage in the last two World Cups and being knocked out in the last 16 at Euro 2020. In 2023, their struggles continued with only three wins in 11 matches, leading to coach Hansi Flick’s dismissal. Following defeats to Turkey and Austria, Julian Nagelsmann revamped the squad for the March friendlies, introducing players from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen and in-form Stuttgart. This strategy paid off, as Germany secured impressive victories against 2022 World Cup finalists France and the Netherlands.

Germany Euro 2024 Match Schedule and Fixtures

Hosts Germany will play the first match of the UEFA EURO 2024 against Scotland on 14th June. The game will be followed by a match against Hungary on the 19th. They will finish their group stages with a match against Switzerland on 23rd June.

Germany Euro Historical Squads

Germany had last won a Euro in 2012, and while they had some good performances in 2020, they could not go beyond RO16. Hence as host of Euro 2024, Germany will aim for a better end to the campaign. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer stands out as a constant presence, featuring in all three squads, and showcasing his enduring talent and leadership.

The defence has changed, with younger players like Nico Schlotterbeck and Robin Koch replacing experienced ones like Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng. The midfield shows a blend of experience and youth across the tournaments. However, Toni Kroos has remained a stalwart over the years. The forwards have also changed over the years.

Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez played in 2012, followed by Timo Werner and Serge Gnabry in 2020, and now Niclas Fuellkrug and Maximilian Beier in 2024. However, Thomas Muller has been a consistent part of the team upon returning in 2020.
